Never heard of it but a friend is planning to obtain a work permit by becoming employed by a Thai company (which he will set up financially). Personally I have my doubts. Any information on this would be appreciated.

Yes, can be done, but he will need > 51% Thai Shareholders, a real office address, VAT Registration, Capitalisation of 2 Million THB plus 4 Thai employees per foreign WP (with evidence of Social Fund Contributions).

Your friend will also need a Non-immigrant B Visa as well as a whole bunch of company papers
