Dvd Burner Reads But Don'T Write

I have a problem with burning DVD discs on my Acer 4720Z notebook, I guess its the drive itself but is there any way to test its the drive rather than any software etc before replacing it?

It reads DVD no problem but will not burn, fails right away at lead in (burn process failed), using the same media I have always used and tried different burning software nero/convertxtodvd. Tried cleaning the lens also. I recently installed Daemon lite to mount a disc and thought this might be the problem so uninstalled but its still the same.

You could try booting with a Linux distro, just to see if it is software-related. If you can burn under Linux then there is nothing wrong with the drive. You can boot with Linux from a CD or USB key without modifying your current operating system at all.

I suspect that the drive has had it though.

My thought too.........

The drives are very easy to replace, generally only one screw then it can be slid out.

Good idea to try with Linux as suggested in earlier post.

That's true. But they can be expensive for what they are, and not always easy to find in spite of there only being a few basic types. I had a lot of trouble finding one for a customer and in the end (on Ebay) it still cost several times the price of an equivalent 3.5in drive for a desktop machine.
