GRANVILLE, NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) -- Police in eastern New York arrested a 43-year-old man on Sunday after he tried to kill himself in the parking lot of a police station as he is being investigated for suspected child sex abuse, officials said on Monday.

Michael Currier had contacted state police when he became aware of an investigation into allegations that he has sexually abused a child less than 13 years of age on an ongoing basis for more than 2 years. Currier, who made threats to harm himself, then responded to a police station in Granville.

"Troopers located him as he was arriving to the barracks and followed him into the parking lot," New York State Police spokeswoman Maureen Tuffey said. "Currier locked his car doors, poured a fuel on himself and was attempting to light a match when Troopers smashed the car windows and discharged a fire extinguisher, preventing the match from lighting."

Tuffey said Currier was taken into custody and remanded to the Washington County Jail, pending a court appearance on Friday. He has been charged with Predatory Sexual Assault on a Child, an A-II Felony, and additional charges are pending.
