Takraw, kite-flying to remain on upgraded Sanam Luang

People will still be able to host takraw games and kite flying contests during festival time on the newly-renovated Sanam Luang, Bangkok Deputy-Governor Theerachon Manomaipibul said Tuesday.

The Sanam Luang landscaping project will soon be finished and officially open to the public on August 9.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) aroused criticism after it initially announced Sanam Luang would be used mainly for royal ceremonies and government-organised ceremonies. Traditional activities such as kite flying and takraw would likely be banned, as the place would be reserved for resting, strolling and riding bicycles.

Theerachon said takraw and kite flying contests, which have been promoted since the reign of King Rama V, would still be hosted on the reserve in festival time. However, if the city permitted unrestrained and disorganised activities there, Sanam Luang could return to its previous state of being less-than-orderly and crowded with street hawkers.
