I am about to get a new desktop, my first for a few years using only laptops. Since my last desktop the screen options are somewhat better.

I only use the computer for internet and excel type things not playing games

Any advice on what the best monitor size to get is , I want to sit at a small desk to use it so will only be about 1 arms length away from the screen

I think about 20 ins any advice

It all rather depends on your eyesight, and how much information you want to get onscreen at any one time and how detailed it needs to be.

Personally I prefer 23 or 24in, but I do spend a lot of time doing graphics work.

Best thing is probably just to go into a shop and look at a few from the desired distance.

you may consider two factors on a LCD display :

amount of information you want to see in one session

for example in Excel, if you have a large LCD and a high resolution display card ( 1920x1024 ) then you see more cells in one go. or you can see parallel web pages on one screen. it is a rational benefit.

comfort level

with the same screen resolution ( say 1920x1024 ) then bigger the screen easier to read. it is just an emotional benefit. well, if you are young with good eye sight, it may not be applied !

if you plan for 20-inch and if you have space, go for 23 or 24-inch !

FWIW, at 32 with 20/20 vision after lasik I find a 23.x" screen really nice at arm's length. As alluded to by others, resolution is important. I would never consider anything less than 1920x1080 on any screen bigger than 15". I do miss the 16:10 resolutions; however purchasing a monitor with a swivel head allows one to re-orientate it to display webpages or vertical spreadsheets...

Get and LED monitor not and LCD

LCD monitors generally have a bad image. LCD monitors dont look as good as quality CRT monitors. LED monitors have a much sharper crisper and brighter image. After going from LCD to LED you wont want to go back.

27 inch is good!

I have a 23 inch for a few months now, at first I thought it was to bit to big as I was only a arms length away but after getting use to it I quite like it. I can tilt my seat back and put my feet on the desk and still easily view it..

LED monitors are LCD monitors. They just have LED backlighting, that's all. Because of this they can indeed look brighter and sharper, but they are still LCD monitors. More info -> LED monitors

By the way, last sunday I also just bought a new desktop with new monitor (after years on a notebook:)). I bought a HP pc (not too fancy, but suff. for me) and a Samsung 23 LED backlit monitor, the S23A550H. It has a 2ms response time and HDMI input (a bit above average spec) and some other useless features like a motion sensor (monitor switches to standby when you walk away). Realy nice screen I have to say! It was 7250baht. I agree with above posters: when you think you will buy a 20inch, go for a 22/23 inch! You will not be dissapointed. Prices are not much higher.
