Bomb blast in northeastern India kills 5

2011-08-01 20:16:15 GMT+7 (ICT)

IMPHAL, INDIA (BNO NEWS) -- Five people were killed on early Monday afternoon when a bomb exploded at a market in the northeastern region of India, police said.

The blast occurred at around 2.30 p.m. local time in the Sangakpham area in the Imphal West District of Manipur state while customers were shopping in the area, which is located near an educational institution.

Police said at least five people, including a student, were killed while ten others were injured in the blast. NDTV reported that the bomb was tied to a two-wheeler, although police could not confirm those reports.

The explosion also smashed windowpanes and some nearby houses and shops were damaged as well. Officials feared the death toll could still rise as some of the injured were reported to be in a very critical condition.

It was not immediately known which group was behind the attack in the volatile northeastern state, but it came less than a day after unknown persons threw several grenades at houses in the region. No one was injured.

Last month, on July 13, twenty-six people were killed and 130 others were injured when a series of three bomb explosions struck three separate locations in Mumbai. It was the deadliest attack in Mumbai since the 2008 attacks which left more than 150 people killed.
