I just posted a topic called New Passport. I know its only an hour or two but I have had no replies. With all the expertise out there surely someone must know. The THai Embassy in Cardiff Has just said that when your Passport is clipped it is null and void so information cannot be transfered. This is crazy I still have 3 years left with no empty pages. There has to be some answer rather than starting the whole O visa program again.

Waiting for some expert advice.

If you had a valid visa in the old passport it would remain valid. But you do not and have not seen any reports to confirm Immigration will accept a re-entry permit in an invalid passport. Normally the extension of stay is transferred into a new passport by Immigration inside Thailand and a linkage of original visa/passport number made.

So best we can say is enter the re-entry information on arrival card and hope for the best. It not accepted you will get a 30 day visa exempt entry and can then convert for 2,000 baht and then extend again for 1,900 baht. Kind of defeats the cheaper UK passport fee if that happens but perhaps it will not come to that. Let us know how it works out in either case as do not believe it has ever been reported.

The OP said that his old passport had his O visa...'retirement permission to stay" and re-entry stamp.

Surely he would present old and new passports at airport immigration and the officer would be able to check his authenticity to enter.....and probably tell him to get the needed stamps in his new passport at his local immigration office?

Or is 'T.I.S. going to apply.//

Because you cannot get a British Passport in Thailand now all Brits will have to face this problem.I have just spoken to Cardiff and they don,t Know. It would be nice to have the assurance that we are not going to face any major problems and are not going to have to start the retirement visa procedure all over again.

The OP started two topics which makes it hard to follow. He stated he has old passport with retirement visa (extension of stay actually) and re-entry permit and original non immigrant O visa. Thus his old passport does not contain a valid visa for entry. As I stated if it did there would not be any issue - but there may be a question of immigration accepting the re-entry permit in an invalid passport as that is not a visa.

That is not true. Passports are still available in Thailand but it is done by mail.

Sent to Hong Kong, not available in Thailand. And next year only available from the UK.

I have a valid multy re-entry and a valid retirement visa in my old Passport which will now be clipped. When I come back in I will have the two passports available. Are they going to stamp my new passport with the end date of my retirement visa? Then when I apply for my new retirement visa will they grant it and in doing so transfer the information from my old passport.

You appear to have a retirement extension of stay (from Immigration not a Consulate) and that is not a visa. For entry you depend on that re-entry permit and there is no reporting to confirm they will accept it in an invalid passport (they may so by all means try). If not it would be start over time.

Passport issue is from Hong Kong now and UK later but you can still apply and receive while in Thailand. It will just be done by post.

10000000% correct lopbur ONLY Extension of Stay can be transferd Visa entry stamp permit to stay can not be tranfered Just present your OLD passport just been and done all this yesterday

The last time I updated my US passport I was given a note from the embassy addressed to Thai immigration to please transfer the visa to the new passport which was done without problem. Have things changed that much or is this still the basic procedure. Reading this thread is confusing and making complex what I found to be a simple procedure.

If done in Thailand, that is still the correct procedure. Almost all embassies give this letter and immigraiton asks for it when transferring the details to a new passport.

But they didn't transfer your visa, only your permisison to stay, visa details and old passport details. A visa itself is never transferred.

That is when from within Thailand and was probably an extension you had, the OP got his New Passport in England and is travelling to Thailand with it, also he has a Multi entry visa, which has now been cancelled as the passport it was in is no longer valid.

Thanks very much for that information but if you send your old passport to Hong Kong it will still be clipped. So if immigration will not transfer from a clipped passport then all Brits are going to be in this situation and all Brits are going to have to go out to get a new O visa to start again. Our consulor dept should get clarification of this. ITS GETTING WORSE.

Just as a note from the other thread the OP opened, they cut the corner of all the pages, I had mine done at the British Embassy in Bangkok, one swift cut and bye bye.

Note - reading the instructions on my next post seems not all pages !!!!

You do not send your passport to Hong Kong just a photocopy of the back page, read the instructions on the website.

Specific requirements from Thailand

ORIGINAL PASSPORT: Thailand is an exception to the main guidance given on our primary website. It is not advised to be without your original passport in Thailand and we recognise this. You may therefore submit a clear photocopy of your passport (just the page with your personal details and photograph). Please note that the passport being renewed will be electronically cancelled and is therefore not valid for use as a travel document from the moment you submit your application. On receipt of your new passport, you must physically cancel your old passport by cutting the corners of the photo page and the front and back covers. Failure to do so may leave your replaced passport open to abuse. Alternatively, you should visit the British Embassy in Bangkok to have your replaced passport physically cancelled.

The poster does not have a multi entry visa - he said he has a "multi entry stamp" in his other thread so that would be a re-entry permit most likely.

As for passport application to Hong Kong you do not send your passport - only a copy - so you are responsible for cutting the corner off. But inside Thailand you visit Immigration and they transfer your current permitted to stay/extension of stay into your new passport. It is not a problem in Thailand.

My embassy takes good care not to damage the page with my current permission to stay, which is the correct procedure.

I believe I had the passport pages cut and a letter from the Embassy asking to transfer it.

At the time I had lost my passport, and had the police statement, but my boss found it later after I had applied for a new one. All the

details were entered into my new Passport.

Can somebody actually point me as to how I apply for my new passport...what I need to supply...application form...mine runs out in Feb 2012 so I guess that I should renew it now..............thanks

A question arising from the answers.

Just renewed UK passport, arrived today, old passport unclipped, will renew retirement visa in 3 weeks do I still require letter from the UK consulate?

Posted

here i sit with my NEW us passport in front of me.( issued Dec 2008) It shows my Original non O visa number and entry point ( Sado non 0 19 July 2002), it is just a simple entry stamp. They have a stamp that they use that they just fill in the blanks when they do this which states that the visa was in passport number xxxx and the dates.

Before i had all this information in my NEW US passport I was able to use my old passport (with the non "o" visa above/retirement extension and multi re-entry permit) and new passport ( which had nothing till i had my first entry and exit stamp into Thailand) Twice, Before i had the above information moved to my new passport.

all this reissue of stamps and such was done at Phuket immigration 30th of April 2009. I never got a letter from the embassy.

if u get a new passport outside Thailand just bring both with u when u come to Thailand and they will stamp u correctly in on the new passport ( make sure u check before leaving) then go to the immigration office u got the last re-entry permit/extension and they will transfer it over.

NO CHARGE!!!

For us passports they place holes in the passport making it invalid

Why do some people make this seem like its a big deal.
