Monsoon expected to make landfall across the country

BANGKOK, 7 August 2011 (NNT)-The National Disaster Warning Center has alerted Thai people across the country of possible flashfloods and mudslides in flood prone areas during this time as a tropical storm is expected to make a landfall.

In the Northeast, Surin Governor Mr. Pipop Damthongsook has been told by the Center to warn its residents who live in the low lying areas and near the rivers. He added these areas have been determined by the Department of Mineral Resources as disaster prone areas.

According to the National Disaster Warning Center, a monsoon from China normally moves past the North, the Northeast, the Central Region and the South from August to November. Flashfloods and mudslides can be expected as a result of heavy rains during this time of the year. Residents in the said areas have been advised to keep themselves updated on the weather forecasts and disaster warnings. They are encouraged to call 192 or 02-399 4114 for more information and updates.

What 'tropical storm'? Can the NDWC be referring to typhoon Muifa (1109)? This looks bad for China, but it's almost 3000 kms away from Northeast Thailand and is heading even further away northeast towards Beijing from the East China Sea.

Perhaps the NDWC knows something which the Thai met service does not.

Just looked at the satellite image and weather maps for the North East. There doesn't appear to be anything very menacing at present.

The report says "August to November" - appears to be a general "Monsoon warning" rather than a specific storm warning.

Agree

Just another poorly worded headline.

I suppose it would be too much to ask that ThaiVisa vet these News stories before posting them.

But I guess that would be asking too much, after all, no one in Thailand takes responsibility for their actions.

We've felt some of the effects of Nok Ten in Chiangmai and of course Thailand always catches the skirt tails of the monsoon every year. It's just the degree that can vary. Still, it's always good to know of any potential problems in a country where the weather can cause severe problems. A false alarm is better than no alarm.

It rains in Thailand from August to November.

Low-lying areas & riversides are "disaster prone areas".

No shit Sherlock ! <_<

What would we do for amusement, if not for these poo-yais, and what could they possibly find to do for a living, if not for their civil-service jobs ?

headline is outrageous....monsoon is a seasonal condition, not one storm system

Seems this is a bad attempt to remind people that the Monsoon Season is near.

Seems this is a bad attempt to remind people that the Monsoon Season is near.

From the April water festival through to November in the northern areas it is expected to be the wet (monsoon ) season, cool and dry through to April. ( this does vary a little)

This spokesperson from the centre doesn't know the difference between a storm-hurricane-tempest-typhoon-from a monsoon season.

If we only had monsoon from August to November near all Thai rice and sugar cane crops would be lost.

So no need to dig that borehole until next year......good

I didn't realize the north had a different raining season than the central region. Now knowing this, I am more perplexed by the OP.
