Let us work for 6 months before criticising us : Yingluck

Newly appointed Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra yesterday asked the public to let her Cabinet do its work for at least six months before criticising it.

"We need at least six months [before evaluation] as administration of the country is a big issue and [we] need time to understand the problems and prepare the policies. After the swearing-in ceremony today, the Cabinet will declare its policies [to Parliament] within 15 days, then it can start working," she said. She did not reveal the date when it would make public its policies.

The first Cabinet meeting has been scheduled at Government House for 9am today, and on Saturday Yingluck is preparing to visit the Kingdom's flood-affected areas.

She is scheduled to visit Sukhothai, then take a helicopter to distribute flood-relief kits in Phrae and Nan. She will travel overnight to her private house in Chiang Mai where she plans to pay tribute to Khru Ba Srivichai - one of the most respected monks in the province - as well as her ancestors, before returning to Bangkok on Sunday.

Asked whether the new ministers were an ideal match for their jobs, Yingluck said she and the party had done their best, considering the many factors involved.

On the reason for giving the post of foreign minister to Pheu Thai MP Surapong Towichakchaikul, Ying-luck said Surapong had been an MP for many years and had participated in many House committees. He also had experience working in a private company with international connections and he understood trade issues very well. Officers at the Foreign Ministry would help him with the diplomatic work, she said.

Former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, the opposition Democrat leader, said he was doubtful about many of the ministerial selections in the Yingluck Cabinet. He said many ministers had not worked on Pheu Thai policies, while people in charge of policy drafting and clarifying policies to the public were not appointed. Therefore, it would be interesting to see whether the government's policies would be the same as those promised during the election campaign.

Abhisit also pointed out that ministers in charge of economic matters were outsiders not experienced in the capital market, where there were many challenging problems to solve. Moreover, the invited ministers were also involved with former premier Thaksin Shinawa-tra's share trade and tax payment issues. The public should keep an eye on possible problems related to these matters.

Abhisit said many ministers' positions - including that of Surapong who said he did not want to work on foreign affairs - came as a surprise. But Abhisit said he would wait and see the government's performance. Some problems might need up to two years to yield results, while Pheu Thai during the election campaign had promised solutions in less than six months.

Abhisit said the public's greatest expectation was for the Pheu Thai government to solve the issue of the high cost of living. Therefore, it should not disappoint them.

Chulalongkorn University political scientist Chaiyan Chaiyaporn said the Yingluck Cabinet in general looked better than the first Abhisit Vejjajiva Cabinet.

While Abhisit had Porntiva Nakasai as commerce minister, Yingluck had handed the job to Kittirat na Ranong who is experienced in the field, Chaiyan said.

He said Surapong might be the Cabinet's weak point. However, Thaksin - with whom he had a close relationship - might be Surapong's mastermind or adviser.

Chaiyan said he was worried that political newbie Yingluck would have problems controlling veteran politicians under her, or she might let her brother Thaksin be the final decision-maker.

Yingluck might be a quick learner and deserved a chance to prove herself. Nevertheless, people would not accept her if she worked to help Thaksin return to the country.

Officers at the Foreign Ministry yesterday privately discussed the selection of Surapong as head of the ministry, wondering why Surapong, who is an information technology expert, was appointed to the position. The foreign minister should be experienced in international relationships and well-known internationally, not just in some countries.

However, they were ready to work with Surapong and hoped he could solve problems in international relations.

Meanwhile, government officers at the Justice Ministry said they welcomed Pol General Pracha Promnok as their minister. Justice permanent secretary Kittipong Kittayarak said Pracha was not only a National Police chief, but a gentleman.

Department of Special Investigation director-general Tarit Pengdith said he was preparing to present the department's work to the new minister. Pracha's experience as a former National Police chief should make collaboration smooth, he said.

She's showing her political niaivete again here. She should realise that politicians, when elected, are given days, not week nor months, to start sorting things out. Unfair? Of course it is and she has to be prepared to see her popularity plunge. She's not got off to a good start with the backtracking on the minimum wage issue and it remains to be seen how that affects her overall standing.

It's the same the world over, the people want change and they want it NOW! Plus of course by "change" they mean anything that puts more money in THEIR pockets, stuff the rest of the country.

Good luck to her, she's going to need it because if she thinks she can totally rely on the rest of her government to support her then she has a rude wake up call coming.

need time to understand the problems

I thought the reason that they got voted in was because they understood the problems! <_<

It would appear she is expecting criticism in a short space of time ,of course nothing new here, this always happens to any politician when they just cannot deliver what they promised in their election campaign.

Why do so many posters in TV have such negative outlooks? Life must be such a problem for them?

Of course newly elected PM Yngluck needs time to address the deep rooted problems hidden behind closed doors of the doomed Dems. Many of which will only surface when the new ministers taking over open the cans of worms.

Yingluck will have a tuff time to be sure, and her popularity will fall as the inherited problems mount up, but any thinking person can see and understand clearly it takes time to put everything in place.

Anyway....... as Farangs our views and thoughts count for naught.

Enjoy the ride... may as well, as no point in getting on the bus otherwise.

I do hope you are not trying to insinuate that the Dems did not inherit an economy that was in one hell of a mess before they took office? .

The rabid fanatical "usual suspects" in TV cannot see anything good in others that do not fit into their outdated and dysfunctional view of reality. They live glued to their chairs and computers waiting for an opportunity to knock down others they do not like, parsing and taking quotes out of context; such is their idea of a life.

Yingluck was honest as opposed to the silver tongued PM who was booted out of office.

Those critics that continue with their negativity cannot envision a hard reality: there are many "state secrets" that were never published and only those in government had access to them; if they have not been destroyed. Abhisit's administration was cagey and not transparent because of the circumstances that elevated him to power. Deals, promises, political debts, allegiance to those "powers that were", etc.

Those rabid "usual suspects" will never admit that it is true: one must give a newly elected PM time to show her mettle.

Will they ever listen to reason and reality and not only to their delusional arguments?

Maybe many of the posters appear to harbour negative outlooks since they do not live on Cloud 9 or some airy-fairly land of their own making.

I agree that any thinking person can clearly understand it takes time to put everything in place. However thinking people are in short supply in Thailand, particularly amongst the red shirt community. Abhisit not having a working majority and having the Army looking over his shoulder must have made life pretty difficult for him. I takes two or three years at least to turn large companies around; the ship of state takes just a little longer, as do miracles.

Anybody that thinks Thaksin, his family and cohorts will be 'The Great Liberators' needs to change their medication. My money is on there being more of the same crap as last time.

This is probably aimed at supporters rather than enemies as to them it sounds like she is asking something reasonable and if she is attacked before this period it makes them think it is unfair. PTP are masters at the PR game

of course reality is that the attacks started ages ago and in politics anything is fair game. This just makes those attack seem unfair to sympathisers and more importantly maybe the middle of the road who are sick of division

Already making excuses! After 6 months...wait another 6 months to understand...and on it goes.

Basically, the equivalent of: wait as long as it takes for somebody like Obama to decide what the hell his "change" means and is going to be, when in fact, he doesn't have a clue.

Doesn't take a fortune teller nor a rocket scientist to realize that this bird doesn't have a clue, and that she's just part of an oligarchy.

Usually it's best man for the job, hire the experienced person with the knowledge and know how. Maybe after this PM, Thailand will realize that.

If memory serves, the Democrat-lead government didn't even get 6 hours before PT and friends started attacking and, wherever possible, undermining any initiatives and policies they were proposing. This has contributed, in no small measure, to the failure of the last government to show any decisive progress in addressing the country's problems.

What right do PT have to expect to be treated any differently, now that they are in the hot-seat???

Ahh Yes Doctor , I fully agree with your diagnosis ,any one who thinks that things will Improve under this lot are in urgent need of medication ,or may I add even lieing on a couch and talking to someone with a white coat and a clipboard ,as their problems could well be physiological and well as physical,LOL.

I agree - She isn't the sharpest politicla tool in the box. It's taken an age to form this government and strangely unlike most PMs she hasn't hit the ground running. It's starting to look like lack of leadership, something the country needs. When ever i see her on the Thai news she rarely says anything of substance and deflects journalists questions with wait and see or please be patient. The new PM should be all about showing direction, leadership and vision. I like the lady and think she should be given a chance, she won the election two months ago and there is very little happening. Don't wanna sound bad on the lady but she should be in TV (not the forum) with a strong presence, outlining policies and the countries direction. Not wait and see!

The same length of time it will take to extract a big stone for every Thai man, woman, and child from his Ugandan diamond mine. Six months.

Asking to be treated with kid gloves comes off indeed as naive and weak. She has no experience in politics and it shows. You don't ASK for a longer honeymoon period. It either happens naturally (with lots of luck) or you charm people so much that you earn it. It's clear she is used to sledding on her family connections (wealth), dazzling smile, non-confrontational manner, and pretty face. How long can that realistically last now that she is the top political dog in Thailand? It's time to show what she's got, she did not do that in the campaign. Begging for it gives a really bad taste and definitely will have no effect on the the length of the honeymoon she gets. Just get to work, girl, you asked for this. You get the whole package. Cliche time -- if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

Do you think she will ever go on Hard Talk? I doubt it.

Wasn't he going to make every one rich in six months?

I have no problem with giving her six months. But she is already backing down on the minimum wage and that makes her fair game today. I will give her six months on any promise she made provided she is working to deliver it. Or even if she has to defer it. But when she starts to back out of it I say show me now.

I was wondering if she asked for the six months in the hopes that the people who elected her will forget her promises. It would seem some of her supporters here on TV all ready have.

I bet Abhisit is loving it!!!:jap: .

Talking about receiving a poisoned chalice - mind you, she is the one that has supplied the poison with those unaffordable promises!!! Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!!!

Another thing, did anyone spot the interesting words she used to describe giving her a chance to prove herself - "wait 6 months BEFORE criticising us" what a gaffe, it sounds as if she is expecting criticism with that revealing piece, as to her expectations of what will happen to her government sometime soon.

Also, will someone enlighten her that she doesn't have a choice on the matter of being given a chance, as if she implements her flag ship policies and people's cost of living rises, they lose their job and the whole host of negative impacts on their lives take hold (as they surely will) then she won't be given 6 days, let alone 6 months!!! Wait and see luv!!! Interesting days ahead (for me anyway) as I like to be amused!!

Not long, but she has raised suspicion about her competence with both the clone issue and also pretty much totally avoiding talking about issues in her campaign. So she's rather a virgin. Time for some action!

You may well be right here. Very unfair to attack a fair lady, not cricket, not done. Still a PM and politicians in general should not complain about being in the limelight, even if they happen to be female. If you can't take the heat stay in the kitchen <_<

I hear what your saying and somewhat agree, but because of another post, I am a little concerned.

PM's Office Minister Surawit Khonsomboon confirmed the reports that Thaksin "instructed" the ministers to vacate their party-list seats.

This gives me pause as to if the new PM is really in charge. :whistling:
