I would like to say a huge huge thank you to Dr Chakrabandhu Bandhuphat and all his medical team and nurses at Sriphat Medical Center, Faculty of Medicine, ChiangMai University

What fantastic professional medical people these guys are!! Well done and thank you again!

why??

I awoke 0500 am on saturday with a slight stomach ache. After about half an hour it was getting progressively worse - my belly button was rock hard and the pain was all around - i self diagnosed that it must be a hernia.

After about 15 mins deliberation whether to see if it was trapped wind albeit excessive i decided i had to go to hospital.

I did drive the 20 mins into ChiangMai - not sure how the ambulance service here works and whether they would turn up? Im sure they would!

After examination the Doctor diagnosed Incarcerated umbilical hernia - simple terms of the hernia i had my intestine trapped in the bowl. Immediate surgery was recommended before more complications and gang green set in with the intestine which appeared to had been trapped for about 7 hours.

To make this story short - Dr Chakrabandhu Bandhuphat diagnosed and recommended immediate surgery - he was also the surgeon in the operating theatre when i was admitted - which is very reassuring! The operation was carried out and i have had a few days of first class looking after by Dr Chakrabandhu Bandhuphat and the nurses i am now at home - ok sore and have to take it easy!

I would like to recommend the hospital the doctor and all the staff to anyone who has a medical problem in ChiangMai - yes i know there are other hospitals and some will say equally good - however i paid CASH and the bill was more than reasonable and far less than the others charge.

Well done again for the professionalism and kindness all the THAI staff who went about their duties

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You

Can you give some more details , which are more relevant than money in such case=

you went straight into emergency or normal reception?

how long did it take until the right doctor saw you?

(can any surgon do this or should it be done rather by a specialist ?)

how long until you were operated on?

English communication no problem with the nurses??

Not wishing to get you to disclose personal information but it is a big help to people if they need medical care if they have an idea of what it has cost others.

If you can post aproximate costs it would be nice.

Khun Doji, I sympathize very much with your observation. It is a relief to read a complimentary and actually grateful post!

Glad to know you are healthy. My experience with Thai hospitals and doctors has been very good. I have seen doctors in the good ole USA that I would not give the time of day.

I've had an appendectomy, broken bones, cysts removed and dental needs taken care of and professionally diagnosed. The naysayers probably went to the cheapest government hospitals they could find.

There are some places in Thailand you do not want to go to for treatment. Government hospitals are good and bad. The locals know which ones to never step foot inside.

The inquiry was about Sripat in Chiang Mai. You wouldn't make it as far as the operating room door for that price!

I have had better luck with both doctors and dentists in LOS than back in the home of the brave.

When I was in Thailand in 2006, I met an English gent in Pattaya who had a DVT. Went to the international hospital and got seen, treated and with a follow up and got change from 200 quid. Sorry, but I have never thought that Thais are incompetent or retarded. You are definitely different from us Occidentals, but just like us, you have good people, bad people, clever people and not sso clever. I still plan to retire there.

I have nothing but good things to say about Sriphat and Suan Dok Maharaj Hospital. My son was born at Sriphat and treated at both the Sripat building and at Suan Dok and everything went very well.

But from the above post...."Doctor fee - operation 1,950.00"...??? Come on, are you sure you haven't been billed separately for the surgeon's fee? Nobody will operate on you in Thailand for that price. Dermatologists charge more to remove something from your skin. As I understand it, this doctor (who teaches Gastrointestinal Surgery @ CMU) cut you open and sorted out your problems. For under 2,000 Baht? No way....

Bill seems a bit strange.

Maybe the physician fee was actually the surgeon and the other for doctors that saw him in emergency.

Certainly a surgeon wouldn't cost less than an anesthesiologist.

Thanks for the very detailed info. I do not htink SriPat is excessively expensive but it is nice to have an idea of what an op like that costs from which we can extrapolate to other procedures. It helps plan how much money to have instantly available.

Yes the net amount is about what I expected, but the itemization seems off.

I had a cholycystectomy in Sripat but that was 5 years ago done by Ass Prof Sandhu Trichak. It was done via key hole surgery and I was in not quite 2 days. Very successful, no problems since (just watch the fats) and the total bill was 42,000 Baht.....but remember that's 5 years ago

Harry - mate, I won't discuss other medical procedures I have had here, but if you are interested at all, pm me for an honest answer of what I had done, where and what I paid. I know what you mean about budgeting. smile.gif

They probably just split the doctors fee for certain admin purposes, I recall Sandhu's surgery fee was 10,500.

Anyway you feeling better mate? smile.gif A grand in pounds is good value.

Then they made a mistake. No surgeon is going to operate on you for 1950 Baht! Do you know any surgeons in Thailand personally? I do, and they drive Mercedes Benz, live in fabulous homes, and own a couple of sets of Titleist golf clubs. They don't live that way by cutting people open for 1950 Baht!

I had the same thing done in Colorado a few years back when I was visiting there. In and out with in 4 hours too keep the cost down. I paid just under $3000 and must say I truly do not feel 100% since.

I have had a back surgery here in Thailand as well as other sergery. Always only got 1 hospital bill that included the surgen (who was schooled in my home town) And never was it over 2000 Bt. Some times even a few hundred baht.

Wishes for a speedy recovery, I know it can take month and you will really want to go out and do things again
