I feel so naive. Here I was hoping, no, counting on, common sense finally being allowed center stage in a country who's people are in great need of ridding themselves from being force fed by pseudo political leaders using their special brand of religious oppression to command respect.

I'm of course taking about Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who openly called for Israel and the USA to be "wiped off the map" a few days ago.

Now, regardless of how many conspiracy theories his paranoid self can come up with, Mr Ahmadinejad is in reality only making things a lot worse for his fellow Iranians, roughly half of which are already so degraded (the women) that it is reform and liberation, not more fanatical religious dogma and restrictions of freedom, they desperately need.

Over the years, I've been fortunate enough to have met many good folks from Iran, most now living abroad and feeling so sad that their country has become the butt end of too many jokes told in and outside of the middle east.

For example, the Lufthansa flight attendant who just before landing in Tehran recently used the cabin's PA system to inform passengers that they needed to set their wristwatches back 300 years for correct local time.

The arab world needs to be enlightened about how democracy, and not necessarily the US or UK flavour of democracy, can actually help them make more money (note that most of Irans wealth is owned by the high priests/mullahs – no wonder they don't want change! – http://www.forbes.com/free_forbes/2003/0721/056.html) and enjoy even better opportunities for the expansion of Islam.

Islam per ce is one of the world's finest religions. A religion full of love, beauty and kindness. A generous and fair religion, full of acceptance and forgiveness.

It has however always been the narrow and cynical interpretation of religions that oppress and attempt to destroy the inevitable evolution of mankind.

Mr. Ahmadinejad, get back into the cave where you came from. Or, better yet, move in with Mr Osama Bin Laden.

Let the Iranian people breathe some fresh air and enjoy the shine of enlightenment. And for crying out loud, get a shave man!

What's this got to do with Ko Samui, or, even Thailand for that matter?

I agree. There may be an Islam / Southern Thailand connection somewhere but I don't think this forum is the place to enflame those issues.

Has nothing substantial to do with either. Still, in a way, my post does has something to do with this far from perfect but yet incredible land that I am a guest of.

If nothing else, my post is meant to remind me (and maybe one or two others bothering to read it) of how fortunate I am to be here. And how humble I need to be considering how so many other less lucky people live our troubled world.

Look upon it as me thinking out load. I'm sure you'll find plenty of other and more relevant posts throughout the forum pertaining to perhaps more important issues like the next full moon party, operning of new bars, finding old drink mates etc, etc.
