I recently got a new Fortuner, this time with the built in GPS.

In my old one I was using a dash mounted Garmin nuvi 710 GPS

(Thai version).

Last weekend we went to Kho Chang from Pattaya and I let the

new built in GPS guide me. That dam_n thing took me on dirt

roads and through scary undeveloped areas, before I started

to ignore it and steered towards the highway. It corrected

the route and stayed on the highway until we where 2/3 there,

and than wanted to go through each small village again.

I stopped several times and went through all the settings and

menus on the built in GPS. It had a selection to "allow highways

and tollways", but I could not find something like "prefer

highways" like on the Garmin GPS. Of course I had "allow

highways and tollways" enabled.

I could not find any setting that would prevent it to go of

the highway. Is this just a useless piece of junk GPS, or did

I miss some hidden menu/setting ?

I used my Garmin Nuvi 710 for many years without any problems

at all. This baby is as close to a mind reader in terms of

directions as I can imagine. Map updates are 1000 baht per

year.

Any pointers/ideas ?

A normal map can't be beaten. I have used it all my life, and never got lost.

You better ask one of the Mods to move it for you to the GPS forum, for some serious answers

I totally disagree. My Garmin Nuvi 710 is a master piece. Very accurate

My Mrs, with the map upside down, calls me a twonk if l miss ''her'' turn.

My toyota GPS is spot on. If I just go for example to get fuel within second's it's updating and pointing me in the right direction. You may have a problem with your's go get it checked.

What's stopping you moving your Garmin Nuvi to the new car?

My toyota GPS is spot on. If I just go for example to get fuel within second's it's updating and pointing me in the right direction. You may have a problem with your's go get it checked.

My GPS is accurate to the location and direction as well. I just don't like it taking

me through dirt roads when I setup a 400km trip.

What's stopping you moving your Garmin Nuvi to the new car?

Nothing. And next trip I will bring it along.

However, my point is that I specifically purchased a car with a built

in GPS, which appears to be useless outside of city navigation.

I was hoping to resolve if there are some settings I have missed or

if there is something other wrong with it. Instead I am getting some

nonsense responses to use a map, and how much better it is ...

seems like lots of really bored people on this board ....

On your Garmin if you select shortest route rather than fastest route it will also take you on small roads and through villages.

Could there be a Shortest/Fastest option or similarly labled option on your Toyota GPS?

My Fortuner in-dash GPS gives me three options after input of the destination. You can then select "Quickest", "Shortest" or another I can't remember the title of. Quickest should keep you on the highways. One thing you can modify in the settings of the unit is to change the average speeds of the roads.

If you raise the average speed of the highways to higher than the default then this would make the "Quickest" route a lot more quicker than the "Shortest" route and keep the route more on highways....If you get my drift.

BTW. When will they start calling these things iGPS? The i thing seems to be popular nowadays.
