I am looking for confirmation of information that I have and information on the procedures and a list of documentation required to obtain a NI-O "follow-on" visa.

A friend holds a valid NI-OA Retirement visa (extended annually for some years) and is resident in Thailand. His wife is currently in Thailand on a series of 60-day Tourist visas (routinely extended to 90-days.

My understanding is that there is a NI-O category for accompanying dependents/spouses of NI-OA visa holders, and that such visas may be granted for one year and renewed much as a NI-OA visa is renewed.

Furthermore, I am informed that the transfer from Tourist to NI-O "follow-on" visa can be done in Thailand; it not being necessary to return to the "home country" to obtain it.

I have also been told that there is no income requirement for such a NI-O visa.

Assistance would be welcome.

Best wishes and thank you.

Your friend appears to have one year extensions of stay for retirement (from immigration) that he originally obtained from a non immigrant O-A visa entry. Cost for extension is the normal 1,900 baht and no financials required. They may, at some locations, be able to convert the tourist visa entry to a non immigrant visa entry in this spouse extension of stay process for 2,000 baht but if not a quick trip to a Consulate to obtain a non immigrant O visa would suffice. There would not be any need to return to home country. Proof of marriage and his extension of stay for retirement are the primary requirements.

Sorry lopburi3, can you just clarify the 'no financials statement' is this for the Non Imm OA (extensions based on retirement) holder or his wife (who is currently multi 60 day tourist +)? Not questioning your infinite knowledge, but you imply he doesn't need the annual lump sum or monthly income? (i.e. in a non Thai/ non Thai marriage (retired), neither need any financial requirements to stay in Thailand)! I've probably just misread! Please clarify! regards

OK ignore my post, I misunderstood, he's already qualified for this years extension and wants to add his non Thai wife (no 'financials' required), he will require his 'financials' next time he extends! Sorry!

Correct one of them will use financials to obtain retirement extensions of stay and the other will not need as they can use section 2.20 as family member of person staying here under section 2.22 of Police Order 777/2551 (which is the retirement extension).

Sorry for 'hijacking' this topic but I have a similar question. My parents are retired and live in Thailand on the basis of a non-immigrant O-A visa and a non-immigrant O 'dependent' visa. Is there a similar non-immigrant dependent or other visa that would allow me to stay in Thailand for longer periods on the basis of my parents' visa? Or would a double entry tourist visa be the easiest way?

Only if you are not over 20 years old can you get a dependent extension as a child of a parent holding a retirement extension (paragraph 2.20 of Thai Police Order 777/2551)

Check with the Thai consulate where you plan to apply for your visa if they will give you a multiple-entry non-O visa for the purpose of visiting family, ie your parents who are retired in Thailand, and what documents the consulate would need with your application. The non-O visa would allow you an unlimited number of entries into Thailand for one year and give you permission to stay for 90 days on each entry. The website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicates that the non-O visa is available for persons who travel to Thailand "to stay with the family"
