North Korea's Kim Jong-il makes surprise visit to China

BEIJING (BNO NEWS) -- North Korean leader Kim Jong-il arrived on a surprise visit to northeastern China on Thursday, the state-run news agencies of both countries reported.

Kim arrived by train in China's northeast after a four-day-visit to Russia's Far East and Siberian Federal Districts where he met Russian president Dmitry Medvedev on Wednesday. Kim and Medvedev discussed numerous topics, including the possible resumption of six-nation nuclear talks.

Two one-line bulletins issued by the North's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) and China's Xinhua news agency confirmed Thursday's visit, but neither gave details about the planned activities or how long the visit would last. China is North Korea's only major ally.

"Kim Jong-il, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and chairman of the National Defense Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, will pay a visit to the northeastern area of the People's Republic of China on August 25 on his way home after winding up his visit to the Siberian and Far East Regions of Russia," KCNA reported. The report was almost identical to that of Xinhua.

Kim also paid an 'unofficial visit' to China from May 20 to May 26. He then visited Beijing, Heilongjiang, Jilin and Jiangsu provinces to see projects related to industrial production, agriculture, technology development, trade and people's livelihood.
