PESHAWAR, PAKISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- At least 11 people were killed on Thursday evening when an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded in front of a restaurant in northwestern Pakistan, local media reported on Friday.

The explosion occurred at a market in Risalpur Tehsil in Nowshera, located in Pakistan's Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province, some 50 kilometers (30 miles) northeast of Peshawar, the Express Tribune reported. The IED explosion consequently started a fire, making rescue operations more difficult.

In addition to the 11 fatalities, 15 others were reported injured, five of them in a critical condition. They were transferred to the Lady Reading Hospital and the Combined Military Hospital where emergencies were declared.

According to preliminary reports, the IED was manufactured with eight to ten kilograms (17 to 22 pounds) of explosive material, causing a heavy blast. Security and emergency teams cordoned off the area to conduct investigations.
