Heres the reply I received this morning, slightly different wording but same result.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear David

Thanks for your email to Sky and please accept my apologies for the delay in responding.

I appreciate your comments in relation to the non availability of Thai channels via the Sky platform. However, the decision to launch foreign channels would ultimately rest with the channels concerned.

We do appreciate that there are many viewers in the UK and ROI who would welcome the opportunity to view more specialist channels and you have my assurance that your interest has been passed to the relevant department for their information.

Once again, thanks for taking the time to contact Sky.

Kind regards

Thailand-UK tried this a couple of years ago. T-UK thread "Thai TV on SKY."

At first members just got the standard "No plans at present" reply. Eventually this one came

Thank you for your email about Thai Channels.

Please accept my apologies for the incorrect information in the email of 10/7/03.

With regard to Thai channels, please allow me to explain. As far as we are aware, there are currently no Thai channels at the 28.2 degrees East orbital position. However, you may wish to contact one of the Thai channels direct for further infomation or Astra Marketing, who market the Astra satellites, at

I hope that the above information is of value to you and may I thank you, once again, for your interest in Sky.

and
Thank you for your email about Thai channels.

Please allow me to explain that each independent company has to make the decision whether to buy space on the digital satellite system operated by Astra.

However, I should point out that the U.K. is not the primary market for foreign channels and, therefore, these channels have decided not to buy space on the digital satellite system operated by Astra.

Thank you for your interest in Sky.

So they contacted Astra
Thank you for your email and for your interest in ASTRA.

I note with interest the result of your web based survey in which 88% of respondents would be prepared to pay for a Thai television channel. Can you tell me how many people responded to the survey?

As you suggest, ASTRA is pro-active in it's marketing and does actively seek new services for carriage on our satellites. However, I am not familiar with the Thai television market. Can you supply me with a list of the existing Thai national broadcasters?

Additionally, it may be that an approach from you as a potential customer in the UK would be a good indicator for a Thai broadcaster of potential demand.

It is also worth noting that even a significant proportion of your indicated 7,000 potential subscriber base is probably too small to support a service by subscription alone. Other revenue streams must be created.

I look forward to hearing from you with the additional information requested above.

Yours,

Karl Gasson

Business Development Manager

After sending contact details for all the Thai TV stations to Astra and also contacting the Thai TV stations about the possibility of using Astra to broadcast to the UK the result, 2 years later, is......zero!

This may be because none of the Thai stations were interested, or they were but Astra wanted to charge too much, or some other reason.

Still, best of luck.
