Suicide attack at Baghdad mosque kills 28

BAGHDAD, IRAQ (BNO NEWS) -- At least 28 people were killed on Sunday evening when a suicide bomber attacked a Sunni mosque in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, officials said on Monday.

The attack happened on Sunday evening at the Um al-Qura mosque in the Ghazaliya area of western Baghdad when a suicide attacker detonated his explosives. At least 28 people were killed and 38 others were injured, some seriously.

Among the fatalities was the Iraqiya Slate lawmaker Khalid al-Fahdawi, according to the NINA news agency. The suicide attacker reportedly presented himself as a beggar in the middle of Sunday evening prayers before detonating his explosives.

Following the attack, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki called on national security forces to unite in the country's fight against terrorism. In addition, he underlined that such terrorist attacks will not deter Iraqis from building their country and expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.

It was not immediately known who was behind the suicide attack, and no group immediately claimed responsibility.

The level of violence in Iraq has gradually decreased since its peak in 2006 and 2007 during the U.S.-led invasion, but suicide bombings and sudden waves of violence remain a concern.

Two weeks ago, a series of nationwide attacks throughout Iraq killed around 70 people. The deadliest incident occurred in Kut, located in Iraq's southern province of Wassit, some 180 kilometers (112 miles) southeast of Baghdad, when an explosion near a goldsmith shop at a market killed at least 34 people.

I indeed have confirmation of the Allah Akbar from another source, but I think it would be considered hate speech to give the link. Suffice to say over the first 30 days of Ramadan the Islamist terrorists have racked up a body count of 776 so far, which is a multiple of 10 of what Anders Breivik managed in July.
