PM Tasks Deputy to Oversee Police Reshuffle

The prime minister is noncommittal on whether the national police chief will be replaced.

However, she has appointed Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung to oversee the annual police reshuffle, which could affect the police chief and other top officers.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra declined to comment on whether the current national police chief will be replaced.

The premier did say, however, that Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung has been appointed to oversee the annual police reshuffle.

Prior to the Cabinet meeting today, Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung, tasked with supervising the National Police Office, promised a swift action against underground Bangkok gambling dens.

Chalerm stopped short of commenting if national police chief Police General Wichien Podposri will be held responsible.

Chalerm did make it clear that someone will be held responsible and that it is unlikely that the police chief and the local police force were unaware of the existence of such illegal gambling places in Bangkok.

He asked everyone not to rush to conclusion that the current police chief will be removed from his post.

He said if such an action is to take place, it must be justifiable to the public.

The deputy prime minister shared with the media his personal opinion on important qualities a national police chief should have.

Among them, Chalerm listed honesty, extensive experience in crime suppression and ability to exert his authority.

Chalerm said no recommendation on the police reshuffle has been submitted to the premier yet.

.

Considering his sons' interactions with the police, it's staggering irony for Chalerm to be deciding the fate of policemen once again, ten years later.

.

Hmm do I detect the putrid stench of yet ANOTHER whitewash!! Edited by Colin Yai

Supreme Commander Discounts Possible Transfer of Police Chief

The supreme commander is confident the current national police chief won't be transferred from his post given his clean image, strong moral character and ethics.

City Police Step Up Vice Suppression

The city police are stepping up efforts to crackdown on illegal gambling dens, narcotics and night entertainment venues.

They have also issued a summon for the two students who were harassed by red-shirt supporters in front of Parliament to give their testimonies on what happened.

Metropolitan Police Bureau's spokesman Police Major General Piya Uthayo said Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung has handed out his policy directives to the Metropolitan Police.

Chalerm has ordered the city police to step up efforts to combat illegal activities in the city, particularly illegal gambling houses.

Not only illegal gambling dens are being targeted, the Metropolitan Police have stepped up efforts to combat vices on all fronts.

Night entertainment venues will be checked for narcotics and must abide by the legal operating hours.

The city police spokesman also commented on the case where two students were harassed by red-shirt supporters in front of Parliament.

Police Major General Piya said the case is now being handled by First Metropolitan Police Division's chief Police Major General Wichai Sangprapai.

Investigators have already gone through the CCTV footage of the incident where the two students were harassed by a group of red-shirt supporters on the day of the policy statement declaration by the Pheu Thai-led government coalition.

The students laid a wreath expressing their dissatisfaction with the House speaker who they claimed were biased against the Opposition.

The red-shirt elements who took part in intimidating the two students will also be called in to give their side of the story.

The two parties are expected to meet with the investigators on September 8.

I double dare to any of the PTP fans in TV to defend the appointment of Chalerm to any government position, let alone Deputy Prime Minister.

Extra points if they can reconcile it with PTP's promise of appointing the best and most suited people to different ministries and government offices.

They did it to get one up on the Democrats appointing Suthep. They actually got 4 or 5 up, though.

Wow. The decisions under this new administration just get better everyday. now this decision is like assigning a wolf to supervise lambs. Everyone must recall the free killing by his son and the subsequent amnesia....

Of course its a horrible appointment. But if you know anything of his history as a policemen you will also know he knows exactly how things work in the force and has the connections. It is an insiders choice and a reasonably polticially clever one albeit objectionable.

It looks very much like the deal is PTP get to control police and leave at least for now the army and security service alone. DSI will be interesting

Former PM Calls for Transparent Reshuffle

The former Prime Minister warns against political interference in the upcoming police reshuffle.

He calls for the transfers to be transparent and fair.

Former Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva called on Deputy Minister, Police Captain Chalerm Yoobumrung to ensure that the police reshuffle is carried out transparently.

He added that the transfers should be based on the individuals' qualifications.

Abhisit warned that an unfair reshuffle will result in more conflicts and internal rifts.

The former premier also reminded Chalerm that the post of the national police chief isn't a political one.

Oftentimes, a new national police chief is appointed when a new government takes office.

Abhisit also questioned the recent increase in diesel price and feared oil distributors will benefit from the suspension of the Oil Fund contribution instead of consumers.

Interesting comment considering the problems Abhisit had with a political police chief choice who remained acting throughout his tenure

Interesting comment considering the problems Abhisit had with a political police chief choice who remained acting throughout his tenure

The difference being, that Abhisit had him appointed following the retirement of the previous police chief, and that was 9 months after Abhisit came to power.

When is the current police chief due to retire?

Isn't it great to see that the supreme commander takes his resposibilities quite seriously by keeping up with what is going on with the police force

oh look what is happening...

All the Pro Yingluck supporters that have made a come back to the forums have suddenly all gone quiet...

They switch sides like the wind...

I suspect that they have simply given up, bored with the anti Yingluk/Thaksin/PTP/Red Shirt/etc hatefest which this forum has become.

Who knows, maybe they'll legalize gambling just in time for Mr.T to carry on where he left of...The wheel keeps on turning...

but deep down these people know how they are to be remembered, even by those who voted for them, and they probably fear death more than most, for their superstitious beliefs hold them to ransom. For all their wealth they are but mere shells of humans, infected by greed. Shame that they're running the country :(

Or maybe they have no defense now that they see the plan begin to unravel. Could be!

Indeed it's painful to see how much sorrow mr.T causes, not only amongst Thais.

Maybe the Almighty is up for an envelope full of cash. We westerners may mock the concept of being the richest man in the graveyard, but perhaps these people have their own ideas of salvation....

I disagree. It is my belief that the group that acts as apologists for this mob LOVE corruption. I think they LOVE extra judicial murders. I think that's how they'd live their own lives if they only could.

With k. Chalerm overseeing the Police reshuffle, cracking down on gambling halls and investigating LM websites, he might also want to have a closer look at wiki ;)

"Murder scandal

Chalerm's three sons acquired a public reputation for violence and troublemaking for their repeated involvement in altercations in Bangkok's massage parlors and pubs. The phrase "Do you know whose son I am?" became associated with the three as a mark of derision for their abuse of their father's political influence. They were involved in multiple lawsuits, which were usually settled out of court.

The most infamous of these cases was the 2001 murder of Pol. Sen. Sgt. Maj. Suwichai Rodwimuti in a pub on Ratchadaphisek Road. Chalerm's youngest son, Duangchalerm, fled the scene and eventually surrendered himself to authorities more than six months after the killing. Chalerm, fiercely protective of his son, threatened the press reporting on the case, resulting in a temporary press boycott of Chalerm. Following this incident Chalerm and his sons published a short-lived magazine criticizing the press for alleged unfair treatment.

The murder case was eventually dismissed by the Criminal Court when witnesses were unable to clearly identify Duangchalerm as the killer. During the investigation Chalerm had given a statement to the police claiming the true killer was Chalermchon Burisamai, or "Ai-Pued", a close friend of his son's. The police have not pursued a case against this man."
