Police to tackle drug trafficking seriously

news2011-09-02_09-25-30_255409020001_priewpan.jpg

BANGKOK, 2 September 2011 (NNT) – Deputy National Police Chief Police General Prewpan Dhamapong has pledged to continue a fight on narcotic drug suppression while expressing his appreciation for the trust that his superiors have given him and made him one of the candidates for the post of national police chief.

Police General Prewpan told the press that he will focus on sealing the northwestern border straddling between Myanmar and the Thai northern provinces of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Mae Hong Son, to prevent infiltration of narcotic drugs from the neighbouring country.

Apart from preventing drug spread, the deputy national police chief elaborated that the police force will raid target communities, rehabilitate drug abusers and enforce the anti-money laundering law against drug dealers to accomplish the said mission.

Police General Prewpan then warned drug dealers to stop their illegal activities or they will face strong suppression drive. He said he also has a name list of all police officers involved with drug trafficking and asked them to cease their activities immediately.

The deputy national police chief voiced his confidence that concrete results of the narcotic suppression mission will be seen within the next three months. He also promised that no extra-judicial killings will be made.

Police General Prewpan however refused to comment on the transfer of the national police chief to prevent further conflicts, but he thanked those supporting him to sit in the post. He said he is ready to solve all problems including narcotic drugs, which he has been working on.

This will be Priewpan's second go-round with a Drug War.

By The Nation

Published on August 11, 2009

Priewpan was a low-key police officer until his brother-in-law Thaksin came to power in 2001. Just before the Thaksin government declared a "war on drugs", the then prime minister handpicked his brother-in-law to head the Narcotics Suppression Bureau. In the police corridors, that meant that Priewpan was being groomed for the position of national police chief, as part of Thaksin's alleged plan to consolidate power through domination of the police service.

And although Priewpan brought some sort of embarrassment to the government with his botched operation to arrest a northern drug kingpin, who subsequently won an acquittal, he received Thaksin's blessing to bypass all senior police commissioners to get to the position of assistant national police chief.

This will be Priewpan's second go-round with a Drug War.

So I guess this country is now headed towards another round of mass extra-judicial killings.

That's not the "best" part of Thaksin's former regime it deserved to go through again, IMO.

You really couldn't make this up!

So the new Chief of Police has a list of the Thai police officers involved in drug trafficking! And could they please stop!

What, like they did when Thaksin announced he had rid Thailand of drugs a few years ago? Still at least the government has said they'll cut out the murders this time so that's a step in the right direction I suppose.

I needed to check the calender to make sure it isn't 1 April.

Have you ever heard so much B%#L-S!>t in any one story before. Oh, and all you really really nice police persons out there, you know, the ones who are selling drugs and who's names we have, could you please stop - it's not a very nice thing to do - will you stop if I ask you really nicely and politely.

What a joke, and the problem is that half the population will believe it.

With a police force like this what hope does thailand have of going ahead .

If he has a list of names of police dealing drugs, why doesn't he have them shot? Are police entitled to more rights than non-uniformed civilians?

And why do they continue this farce about his promotion? Now it's 14 candidates - you could include Mickey Mouse and nobody would notice.

The drug trade is far too profitable for the corrupt Thai police to ever much impact on. They are obviously involved in it themselves at all levels, as are untouchable senior military figures and politicians. The best chance of success would be for him and all police above the rank of major to be sacked and be replaced by a hand picked corps of expat police.

"He said he also has a name list of all police officers involved with drug trafficking and asked them to cease their activities immediately".

What!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - I simply cannot believe what he has confessed to. Instead of telling those police to stop he should arrest them and stick them behind bars!!!. What sort of a police force is this???? This admittance that they have a list of police involved in drugs trafficking is incredulous!!! Sorry,I can't think straight any more as I'm bewildered and shocked by this.......

I have always heard for years that the police are heavily involved in the drug trade. So it is nice to hear that it is true. But I guess I did not expect to hear confirmation of this fact from the incoming chief of police of Thailand. :clap2::clap2::clap2:

Seriously, you could not make up stuff like this. For every news story that comes out on Thai Visa, I always look closely for the little red letters that say satire.

Once again these reports are not for us foreigners, it is for the Thais to show that the new highly qualified(nothing to do with nepotism)Police General has everything under control and that those naughty little boys(in Brown) on my list better stop, or at the very least, give me some of the spoils. As it would be very difficult to find an honest policemen(I am sure there are one or two), the best solution is to place them all in a stadium and blow them up, start again clean, hopefully.

Let's see if I get this right.

The soon to be former chief of police is being shown the door because he should had known about the clandestine casinos, yet the appointed successor straight out says that he knows people in the police force, names and everything, involved in drug trafficking yet he doesn't prosecute them, and we are supposed to think of him as a better man for the job???

We truly are through the looking glass.

He's not going to prosecute them, just ask them to stop?

EPIC FAIL!!!!! (and he hasn't even started yet).

Wow. All these conclusions drawn from one article. In order to obtain a conviction, There has to be a case. That means an extensive investigation and conclusive evidence. It means people have to talk and point fingers. Unless there is a nationwide crackdown, it can't happen. Does anyone remember the famous story of Frank Serpico? It took years for the government to take a bite out of corruption in the NYC Police Dept. We are now seeing wide scale allegations involving corruption in the Metropolitan police force in England courtesy of the Rupert Murdoch phone hacking scandal. That scandal was the tipping point. It took the Rodney King riots in LA before action was taken against the LAPD. In Canada, both the Toronto and Montreal police departments were subject to major corruption probes. In those cases, most of the accused walked because the cases could not be made. Then there were the allegations of shakedowns of immigrants in Germany. Nothing came of it because a case could not be made.

It is very easy to say fire them or put them in jail. Unfortunately, these are difficult cases to prove and require undercover operations over a period of time. The corruption runs deep and reaches into every segment of high society. This is one problem that afflicts everyone; Democrat, PTP, the military and the non aligned. There has to a watershed moment for action to be taken, and it has not happened yet.

Yes, action has to be taken, Unfortunately, what do you think will happen when senior military officials are arrested on allegations of conspiring with Burnese yaba exporters? The drugs can't get across the border in large quantities without the help of the military officials responsible for those borders. The drugs can't get arrive in cargo trucks of commodities without someone in customs not helping. Each of these departments has vested interests and protectors that saw there positions entrenched during the various periods of military rule.

how sure are you ?? ,... i honestly believe there are no honest "police officers " in thailand , if there were,... all the scams would be exposed and there would be no police left at all , they are all "on the take" from 'on the spot' fines down to the drugs , jet skis, tuk tuks, prostitution etc etc ......its runs far too deep to stop it , and if the top brass like this guy just ASKS officers if they will please stop drug dealing instead of taking positive action ,..........why /how will it ever be stopped ? , ......i like your solution though, ... why not throw the politicians in with them while your at it !

Here is a theory...

It was the police whom swiftly eradicated (war on drugs) during the beginning of Taksins regime

with many deaths and DRUG money uncovered - the money was used to pay Thailands Intl debts off

Taksin became a hero to the people with such a swift anti drugs move...

But if the above post is true

Then perhaps the Police were just removing some of the competition or low level runners, whilst handing over Taksins Bail out money - it was a win win situation...

The same pattern is about begin... But the police are getting a heads up to clean up their act before the next blitz.

Thank you! If they want to be serious about this, every name on that list should be thrown in jail or shot. Then maybe people actually COULD get out of the drug trade so they're not having to make payments to these "officers". The cycle will go on till the biggest link is broken.

It took the Rodney King riots in LA before action was taken against the LAPD.

It takes severe lack of knowledge regarding the events around the RK-riots to suggest it was a catalyst of any real significant memorable change in the LAPD and severely diminishes the real work that was done to clean up the disreputably police department.

But I digress...
