KayCee
We're in the process of buying a new car, and having a hard time figuring out whether there is any satellite radio service available for cars here in Thailand. It'd be nice to get to listen to BBC, CNN, or soccer matches, or whatever during the hours spent in the car, but out dealership seems to say that while we can have satellite television put in the car, they've never heard of sat radio being available. Does anyone know ? Thanks!

oakweb
The only option is to download pod casts and listen to them that way. There's no way to get satellite radio in Thailand the good news is most of the stuff is podcast available..so just dock your Iphone or Android phone, set your favorite pod cast to download, and when you get in the care play it on your phone through bluetooth or a audio jack

MoonRiverOasis
Get a 3G data plan, a smartphone or tablet (IOS or Android) and the "Tunein Radio" app and you'll be able to listen to literally 1000's of radio stations from around the world in your car, so long as you're in a 3G service area (BKK, Hua Hin, Pattaya or Chiangmai). LOL @ Car PC - go the old school Edited September 7, 2011 by MoonRiverOasis
Spoonman
LOL @ Car PC - go the old school It effortlessly streams radio stations, has enough capacity to store all my music/music vids/porn, runs my GPS (I still prefer my portable TomTom though) both front and rear camera's (recorded to HDD), full engine monitoring etc etc, If I was back home I could program it to start my car in the morning to warm it up....gotta love old school, can your smart phone do the same, I know my carpc was cheaper even including the water cooling. Sure, all of it. The Galaxy S2 is a USB host (as well as client), so that means it can have 3TB of storage attached and support other USB peripherals too. It has 24mbps 3G (in reality more like 14mbps with AIS 3G ATM), a Bluetooth OBD-II dongle can send diagnostic data wirelessly with many apps to provide readouts if you want advanced vehicle diagnostics. Recording video is no problem, it'll do 1080P @ 30fps with the internal CCD, but also supports IP and USB cams, and there's more recording apps than you can poke a stick at. It also has accelerometers and GPS built-in, so can do nav (Tom Tom comes for free with TH models) and support things like software dynos and acceleration timing/loggers too. Oh, and it makes phone calls If you want a larger display and/or a cheaper price, just buy the tablet version - the 7" tablet is an almost perfect fit for a standard double-din opening and I doubt a water cooled PC would cost less

Gadget? - It's a dual core 1.2GHz Linux PC that just happens to look and work like a phone too, heh. There's nothing a CarPC can do that it can't, same shit, different chassis You do have to pay for the small form factor phone chassis though - 18K Baht in fact, but the larger 7" tablets go for around 9K baht now.. eTiMaGo
each platform sure has its advantages and drawbacks... I've wanted to build a CarPC for ages, but must admit that a 7" tablet would be a more elegant solution. I actually took out my stereo head unit and put a phone cradle in its place for now

A laptop in a car is inconvenient as it cannot be integrated, however my first attempt was separating the screen from a net book and flush mounting it into the Dash with the guts of the machine under the seat. Card reader on board , just put in a mem card . Look at your slots in your old laptop and you will find that it has somekind of usable slot ( even pcmia to USB is available ) . Now to the original question . If you can have sat tv in the car ( and i do know you can have ) then you can have sat radio . Now , do not expect any channels like western world since you are still getting them from the sat you are pointed at ( Thaicom 5 ??? ) . I do not know which channels are on but as far as i know , all sats give out radio channels next to tv channels . I'll try to find which radiochannels are on the sats . Now if you still do not have any channels broadcasting radio , you can always use the TV and do not look at the image . You can even have True receivers available for car ( so put the card from home receiver into your car receiver and finished . Just found the the page . http://www.lyngsat.com/thai5.html This is Thaicom 5 which i think is the sta you can point for sat tv in the car . Now in this list you will see the radiochannels which are available. ANY sat receiver i know of can receive the radio channels and you just need to point to the receiver to look at the radiochannels on this sat to find it .
