Phuket Safe From Attack?

KhunBoom

Do people think that Phuket, in the heart of Islamic Thailand, is safe from attack because the Islamic community get such profit from all the business ventures both legal and illegal.

Remember now we have now caught many Muslim people in the drug business in other parts of the world! What say oyu all?

Interesting notion, but experience suggests that the terrorists aren't rational enough to factor this in..

A lot of the economic victims of terrorism are the perpetrators own creed.

Catholics in Northern Ireland

Moslems in Middle East and Indonesia

Have you ever read 'Platform' by Michel Houellebecq? Ominously prescient.

Phuket is as safe as any other tourist destination in the world and a lot safer in many cases. Where this has happened is 5+ hours south by car. It has been happening down there for ever. It is on the Malaysian border and beleive me this is not like any other part of Thailand - in fact its like its own country down there.

The Phuket people be it Muslim or ortherwise are not into blowing people or buildings up - they are easy going people!

Phuket didnt have a high season last year due to sars (not that there was any cases in Phuket anyway) and we are looking forward and currently having a great high season!

Rest Easy and come to Phuket - (by the way, if you would like to buy a house, land, villa etc, Pm me! :o

Always enjoyed Phuket. I treated a cousin to his only trip to thailand ever. Now his comments are I want to go to that town <deleted>*ket. Do you think the names in Thailand fit the atmosphere (bangkok). Magical place it is. Low season is great in

most places in thailand, expectations by the locals are much better and a whole lot

more friendly.

It is a bit unfair to tar all Muslims with the same brush. I live in a predominantly Muslim neighborhood and the local Muslims are all friendly, decent people who find the terrorist activity in the South and other parts of the world to be abhorrent.

The gentleman has a very good point, the unrest in the South, much of which is being stirred up by a hardcore few, is pretty well restricted to the deep south of Thailand and is not necessarily indicative of the feelings of all Muslim Thais.

The gentleman is all wrong. I am merely exploring facts. Another fact is that I have spent more that 50 days per year in Patong every year for the last 3. I was in Patong when the world was attacked on 9/11. I made 6 vistis to Thailand last year in support of Thailand. I believe Patong is safe and have many Muslim people that I interact with. My laundry service, many food places, shops and I hove this doesn't shock you...I know very nice lady who engages in P4P activities. So I'm not anti Muslim, I'm not anti travel to Thailand and I don't SPAM this board.

All these attention getting posts with the big smile from a NetNerd who nics as The Gentleman is here for one purpose, to SPAM and only to SPAM as he did in his las post. Next thing you know it will be used condoms!

Here is " the Gentlemans" SPAMola...I bet you are salesman and not a gentleman!

"(by the way, if you would like to buy a house, land, villa etc, Pm me!"

Yes with free speach and down with Selling, Promotion, Advertising, and Marketing. That would be very un_Gentlemanly do engage is such a travesty as to attempt to hide your real purpose amongst cheap shot <deleted>!

I made a joke about buying a house, land etc, do you really think I am spamming the board??? Out of my nigh on 200 posts, have I mentioned I was trying to sell something and do you think I would be doing here in a forum? wake up lad!

Net Nerd - Great I like that.

I love you first paragraph, exploring facts - slandering muslims more like it - you have done it in 3 posts.

"I made 6 vists to Thailand last year in support of Thailand. " -

I think you mean to support your 50 days a year whoring in Patong.... Thailand loves you to mut!

"I believe Patong is safe and have many Muslim people that I interact with. My laundry service, many food places, shops and I hove this doesn't shock you...I know very nice lady who engages in P4P activities. "-

So basically any Muslim that gives you some form of service?

You started your threads by yourself, come up with a better argument to support your <deleted>.

The south has long had some voices saying they want their own country. So what will be next....a moving boarder that will find violence slipping over as it now does from Malaysia. This has got to stop! Now, a question that must me addressed. Will religious extremes attract the moderates and create new front of terror. So, I think the PM will act firmly to protect Thailands home land, as well they should! If that means using some of the expertise that is very active in the north and bring in U.S. Special Ops so be it. Thailand has the right to determine their own destiny and not be robbed of the very important tourist market by foriegn extremists! Just think we could open Korat and Utapao air bases, again, and watch their economy grow. Down side, all those Issan Hotties will be staying home.

Thailand and her people should not be subjected to terror. Bombing of Schools, murdering policeman, stealing from people who have worked all their lives! How is any of that good!

How is any of that good!

It's not, but to bring in American troops?

Thats one of the reasons Thailand is like it is today because of what was happening here.

The U.S.A used Thailand same as they used the U.K as an unsinkable aircraft carrier.

Tho only good thing about this daft idea is that I am the other end of the country.

The war after that one, the one the Americand fought by proxy, the cold war.

The best way America can help the world is to stay at home.

Thanks anyway for saving the world, Ronald Regan and fast food.

We are just a bunch of ingrates aren't we that don't know which side out bread is buttered?

You know what the doctor told old Ron?

He said I have some good news and some bad news.

The bad news is you have the human form of CJD.

The good news is that in 6 months you won't know anything about it.

Ahem, getting back to Phuket . . . and the question was - Is it safe?

A few things to consider about Phuket – and I live there (here) – so these are only my personal observations and opinions.

Patong is not Phuket – is it only the tourist center. The Muslim community is not large there, it is more concentrated in Kamala, Bang Tao, Mai Khao and other communities in the northern part of the island.

Generally speaking the Muslim community keeps to itself in small fishing communities. Don’t confuse a few “jack” Muslims in Patong with the more concentrated, and conservative, population in other areas. You will only rarely see completely veiled and covered women in Patong (and often they are tourists) as you will in the other areas.

Some foreigners in Kamala have been moving out of the area as they have found the local population less than hospitable. Numerous people have had their pets poisoned.

Why wouldn’t Phuket be a good target? Isn’t Soi Bangla all that is abhorrent to the culture? And, don’t terrorists generally soil their own area first before they branch out?

Recently in Bang Tao, written in Arabic, were several slogans encouraging Jihad – and some in English about fighting Bush. They get painted over from time to time, but also reappear. Yeah, those signs are not in Patong – so the people who hang there may not see them. But, they are in conservative areas where discontent and nut cases breed.

Personally, I think it is safe, but then I don’t hang on Soi Bangla either. Nor do I own a dog. Nor have terrorists in general exhibited highly predictable patterns of where and when they will attack.

No place is really safe from these nutty wackos who see their own death as an express train to “paradise” – it is best just to keep your eyes open.

Realize also that Thaksin has pretty much pretended the problem doesn’t exist! The problem in the south is only a few “bandits”! Ignoring the real situation certainly won’t help.

So now we are seeing more and more terrorism in the south of Thailand. What is going on here? What are we starting to see? Could it be there is a world-wide Muslim movement to spread terrorism to countries around the globe? Could it be that the "peaceful religion of Islam" is being high-jacked by a few radicals, to spread terror and bully their way all around the world?

And if that is the case, if we don't identify it soon, and if we don't all agree to actively stop it, what will happen? If those who already dislike the U.S., try to prevent the U.S. from helping in this process, who will step up to the plate and stop it? Who will have the money to do that? Who will have the means, if not the U.S. (the last true super-power).

...As a side note, I've been hearing the Islamic radicals for quite some time now, accuse the west of trying to "wage war on Islam". Total bunk--America is the home of freedom of religion. But now I suspect I know why... It's so when they commit their terrorist, bullying tactics, they can hide behind "See-I-told-you-so" posturing if anyone dares fight them back, confusing the issue--when they are the ones who are initiating the terror in the first place.

Note: I'm not saying all Muslims are to blame. Only the extremists who are causing problems...

It is interesting that you see all the veiled women selling food in Robinsons in Phuket town and the Muslim food stand even in Kalim just as you head up the hill toward Kamala. To be honest I don't stop at the Muslim shops outside of Patong but had no problem doing business with Muslim people. As I said I often see a Mulsim (Jack Muslin ) in a P4P mode. We do other things and stay incontact. She was home in Korat having a baby and we spoke everyday on my December trip. Only thing about her being Muslim is I don't get prok products yet she will have many beers. I have seen the Mulsim stuff posted even in Bangkok but remember there are anti Islamin anti Arab signs in many bars in Pattaya and Bangkok.

I don't blame them all but it is a religion that allow no tolerance. " Greedy Zionist and Filth of the Crucifix" is the motto of many. Interesting how many in the Muslim community in America speak out aqainst extrimist. Guess one they have dined at the table of freedon pita bread don't look so good.

Is it safe, I'll be reporting on location soon!

interesting spin on a good a valid topic for this forum!

No my statement but an interesting spin on the deal!

I would think that Pattaya is a greater risk-especially during the Cobra Gold exercises. There are throngs of Americans packing the bars, as well as U.S. Navy ships off-shore for a U.S.S. Cole-style attack. In the book "Militant Islam in S.E.Asia" Zachary Abuza states that JI/Al-Quaeda have shifted their strategy looking for "soft" targets frequented by Westerners,i.e. bars and clubs. How easy is it to chuck a grenade into a bar full of U.S. service men then speed-off on a motorbike into some Pattaya alley? I was in Pattaya last year during the exercises and security is a joke-a bored-looking Thai with a walkie-talkie and flashlight. Come to mention it security at BKK airport is pretty lax as well. Pattaya's large Middle-Eastern section isn't comforting either. The Ramzi Yousef cell in the Phillipines married bar girls in order to establish bank accounts and "front" companies for operations in the P.I. There is no shortage of weapons in this part of the world either-go to Aranyaprathet along the Cambodian border its like a freaking Army surplus store. I Went drinking in the bars that cater to middle-easterners off of Walking street and noticed that they are much more aggressive with the girls than even the most obnoxious falang-probably stems from growing up repressed. One even tried touching my B.G., and he almost got my size 13 American boot stuck up his ass. Well, now that I've rambled you into boredom bear in mind this interesting statistic the next time some liberal tries insisting that they are experts on Islam and it's peaceful nature "75% of the ongoing conflicts in the world involve Muslims-either between Muslim nations or within/between non-Muslim states". That is a fact, read Samuel Huntington's "The Clash of Civilizations-and the Remaking of World Order".

More news from Phuket Gazette this morning (since that was the original thread):

War weapons recovered in Kathu

KATHU: Police recovered a briefcase full of explosives along a road in Kathu early Monday morning after investigating an anonymous tipoff.

Responding to a call phoned in on the emergency 191 number at about 1:30 am on January 5, Deputy Phuket Provincial Police Commander Pol Col Apirak Hongthong ordered officers from Thung Thong Police sub-district to secure the location before racing to the scene with a team of police officials from various units.

Near an electricity pole along Phra Phuket Kaew Rd (the Sam Kong-Kathu road), police found a briefcase containing five M67 fragmentation grenades, two one-kilogram TNT bombs and 191 rounds of assault rifle ammunition. The grenades, bombs and ammunition were wrapped separately in three plastic bags.

KhunBoom, Calm down. Actually, from your previous posts, I think that I'm on your side, but I truly don't know where to find out about these abbreviations. Is there a place that tells one?

As for BG, I really didn't get it when I wrote the post. Boy/Girl was the first thing that I thought of, it got stuck in my mind, and it wasn't till about 15 minutes after I wrote the post that I realized that it must be Bar Girl.

If I have a point, it is that some of us don't understand when one abbreviates, so don't assume that everyone does.

However, again, is there a place where they are listed?

:o Peace!
