BANGKOK (BNO NEWS) -- Suspected militants on Thursday killed at least five soldiers and severely wounded another in an ambush in Thailand's restive south, officials said on Friday.

The attack occurred when the soldiers were returning to their base after a physical check-up at Kapho district hospital in Pattani province. As their vehicle approached their base, a bomb buried on the road was detonated by militants, according to the Bangkok Post.

Following the bombing, the militants opened fire at the soldiers, who were already injured from the explosion. Five of the soldiers were killed, while the other one was severely wounded.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday night, suspected militants also bombed and set alight a police station in Narathiwat province. There were no casualties as the station was due to open in two weeks.

Separatist groups in the southern regions, which are for a majority Muslim, have brought constant and violent uprisings in the region for the past 6 years. Over 4,800 people have died and more than 7,000 others have been injured during this period.
