Funny what one comes across online.

Quote from US Consulate, Chiang Mai webpage:

"The US Consulate General in Chiang Mai is the sole US consular presence outside Bangkok..... In addition to Department of State employees, staff from the Drug Enforcement Administration and the US Air Force's Technical Application Center are stationed in Chiang Mai associated with the Consulate"

Not a great surprise about DEA folk in CM, but AFTAC is a very interesting organization, see Wikipedia link below:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Force_Technical_Applications_Center

The US Consulate, Chiang Mai, webpage goes on to say in relation to US activities in CM.....

"A US Air Force detachment monitors seismic activity in conjunction with the Royal Thai Navy".

So the Thai navy is in town too! Must have had a heartache over the tremors we experienced in March, or was it an earthquake at all.....?

didn't know about AFTAC, but i think you'll find that apart from Susan the Consul-General and Chris the Consular Officer almost ALL other staff are DEA!

The Royal Thai Navy has a communications facility that is in view from my apt as I write this, on the road up the mountain to Doi Suthep.

Go past the Wat, around a couple of sharp curves, there it is plain as day with a big sign clearly stating its presence.

Probably does the mundane task of intercepting radio and telecom from places west and north.

Big whoop.

someone is watching you all the time in chiang mai.you never know who sees you as you go about your business

I hope that they have better things to do than monitor my business, otherwise those reports they pass on to CIA headquarters are going to be pretty boring.
