Thaksin and Hun Sen deny bilateral issues on agenda

Ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra got a warm welcome from Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen yesterday - two days after the former's younger sister, Prime Minister Yingluck, made her first official visit to the country.

After Thaksin's arrival yesterday evening, he and Hun Sen hugged and greeted each other as "brother". Hun Sen said there was no discussion of bilateral issues during his meeting with Thaksin, amid speculation that the two countries' overlapping maritime claims were on the agenda.

Thaksin was scheduled to deliver a lecture on development as part of a conference on the Asian economy, and to play a round of golf during his weeklong stay. Thaksin said he was visiting Cambodia to participate in the Asian Century forum at the invitation of Jose de Venecia, honourable chairman of the Centrist Asia Pacific Democrats International and a member of the Royal Academy of Cambodia.

He added that he would also attend a separate economic forum for Cambodian economists. Thaksin said he would deliver lectures on the challenges and opportunities facing economic development in Asia at the two events.

Hun Sen said the aim of Thaksin's visit was to exchange ideas on economic development, not to negotiate with Cambodia on either joint oil and gas development of overlapping maritime claims in the Gulf of Thailand, or the recent border conflict near the Preah Vihear Temple.

Yingluck yesterday posted the following message on her Facebook page: "As the head of the government, I confirm that the 4.6 square kilometres [adjacent to the temple] is in Thai territory. Thailand claims it belongs to Thailand, Cambodia claims it belongs to Cambodia. This is why it is called, 'overlapping area'. This government will solve the problem of overlapping area through diplomatic measures according to the evidence and international laws."

After Yingluck's visit on Thursday, Democrat spokesman Chavanond Intarakomalyasut said the prime minister had failed to assert Thailand's claim to the disputed 4.6-sq-km area, damaging Thailand's campaign to claim the land.

Chavanond also raised concerns about Yingluck's meeting with Chevron CEO John Watson ahead of her trip

Thaksin-Hunsen tee off, Pracha turns down Cambodian visit

BANGKOK, 18 September 2011 (NNT)- Ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s travel plans to Cambodia had included acquaintances with the Cambodian governmental body and major top brass from representatives of the Cambodian army to politicians, all of whom welcomed Mr. Thaksin warmly and shared insights. After the meeting, Mr. Thaksin travelled to Siem Reap Province for a golf tee off with Cambodian Premier Samdech Hunsen

As for Pheu Thai MP Pracha Prasopdee, the Samutprakarn representative had hastily cancelled his own plans to visit Cambodia due to a high level security risk exposure, judging from the previous assassination attempt.

According to related sources, Mr. Pracha’s security is still at risk due the unknown whereabouts of the gunman. Mr Pracha, along with other several MPs hence had fearfully turned down the invitations.

He added that he would also attend a separate economic forum for Cambodian economists.

Are these the same 300 Cambodian economists that heard his scorpion and turtle story at the last economic forum for Cambodian economists in 2009?

I had no idea that Cambodia had 300 economics experts.

Sure 300, but only three of them are any good,

and they are out of favor for speaking the truth.

There ya go.

No bilateral interests talked about! ROTFLOL

Sorry, let's only talk about mono-lateral interestes

and the other can just not listen, not being interested.

It is amazing that they expect people to believe these sound bites.

Thaksin gives economic lecture in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- The fugitive ex-Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Saturday afternoon gave an economic lecture to approximately 150 Cambodian economists and high-ranking officials. Describing Cambodia is like his home, Thaksin said that Cambodia's economy has developed well in the last decade, but the country still needs to invest more in infrastructure such as roads, bridges and railroads, and in the sectors of education and vocational training in order to create more job opportunities. He said that in order to build trust among foreign investors, Cambodia must have "a clear economic policy" and "the law system must be strictly respected."

Speaking at the opening of the lecture session, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Keat Chhon, who is also the Minister of Economy and Finance, said that it was a great honor for Cambodia to share Thaksin's knowledge and experience on economic development. Thaksin Shinawatra arrived in Cambodia early Saturday to give two lectures in two separate conferences. During the stay, he has meet with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and a group of Pheu Thai's members of parliament. He has been living in Dubai to avoid a two- year jail term for violating a conflict-of-interest law.

He is a close friend of Hun Sen and used to be the economic advisor to the Cambodian government and Hun Sen from November 2009 to August 2010. This is his fourth time to visit Cambodia since he was toppled.

Just reading up a bit on the 1st Executive Council Meeting, Centrist Asia Pacific Democrats International, Phnom Penh Accord, held on the 1st of December, 2010. There's some interesting reference to democracy, UN, etc. Makes you wonder why a man like k. Thaksin, knowing his reputation, is invited? A matter of 'know your enemy'?

Was this a straight-face comedy routine? Cambodia should spend more on education and "the law system must be strictly respected."

I'm sure he appeared to be quite sincere - Thaksin has faking sincerity down to a fine art.

BTW Where's Yingluk's big smile these days? Starting to look a little rough around the edges.
