I have found what looks like a good site for long term rentals on the island http://phanganisland.com/ and am waiting for them to get back to me. Can anyone recommend any other web sites offering long term accomodation or perhaps a particular resort/house?

MUST HAVE (genuinely) FAST INTERNET (256k) as I plan to continue my UK based internet job from the island (the embassy and consulate here in the UK have both assured me this is OK) I cannot use an internet cafe due to confidentiallity issues, I will be taking my laptop, I do not need a computer to be supplied.

I find most of those online sites to be rather more expensive than ones you find yourself. Your best bet is to come here and check it out. These sites can promise lots of things but not necessarily guarantee it.

Fastest would be the closest to Thong Sala.

Yeah that's pretty much what everyone is telling me, I suppose I need to find a decent (cheap) bungalow complex/hotel for a couple of weeks while I find a house. Can you reccommend a decent place with internet connection in the room (the job I do requires confidentiallity) I will have my laptop.

How will I go about finding a house when I get there? I'm not expecting it to be like here at home where there is an estate agent with lots of cards in the window or am I wrong?

there are signs up all over koh phangan for houses to rent. if you ask thai people ("mi ban chao ti nai khap?") they will jump up and help you find one. the best areas to find them are going up the west coast from thong sala to mae haad (many), or going from thong sala to haad rin. there are also places to rent in places like thong nai pan and had tien, but these beaches are more remote.

for ADSL, there are plenty of places within thong sala town that will have phone lines already. maybe a couple in ban tai. that will be it. the phangan island site lists mostly it's own properties at jacked up prices within a small area (around sri thanu), and though their places are not bad you can find better. the only reason they can offer internet access is that the owner has a wireless access point that the surrounding houses can pick up on. i personally would not want to live in that area though.

thong nai pan is for some reason the easiest place to get ADSL set up now. i think they just built a new phone tower or something. you call TT&T and they send a guy from surat thani to install the phone line and turn on the ADSL signal. it's about 3500b to install and 890b/mo. for 512/256 access. (you have to pay 2 mos. up front and some fees in addition so it ends up being almost 7000b to get started). you have to talk to the owner of the house and get them to agree, as they will not set up solely for a farang. you can set up in ban tai or wok tum also, but they have a policy in those areas that they need a list of people who want phone lines installed in the area first before they will put one in.

there are no guesthouses that i know of with internet access, though there are a couple of really expensive resorts you can try. you can also try making a deal with one of the internet cafes to let you plug in your laptop to their network.

oh! i forgot to mention that IPStar satellite is also an option. you can live anywhere if you purchase that system. check out the internet and technology board for more info on that. they have a new deal which is 4500b set up and 1500b/mo. again, they send a guy from surat thani to set up.
