DIR, PAKISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- At least seven people were killed on Friday and a dozen others were injured when a passenger bus fell several meters (feet) down a trench in northwestern Pakistan, officials said.

The accident occurred in the Ashiri Drah area in the Upper Dir district, which is located in Pakistan's northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where the passenger bus fell in a trench, local daily the Nation reported.

According to the reports, the passenger bus was on its way to Upper Dir after taking off from Ashiri Drah. The fall killed seven people, while 12 others were reported injured, most of them seriously.

Emergency teams arrived at the scene quickly, transporting the injured to the District Headquarters Upper Dir. No further information was available.

Road accidents are common in Pakistan with more than 5,500 fatalities in 2007, according to the most recent police data. Many accidents are the result of poor infrastructure and the disregard of traffic laws.
