smokie36
This shows up as working in Device Manager on a Packard Bell imedia S1800 but there is no wireless function available or showing. Any ideas? Edited September 27, 2011 by smokie36
Darrel
The Imedia S1800 is a desktop PC. It does not have wireless. The Gigabit Ethernet in the device manager is the network card for wired ethernet connections. If you want wifi on your S1800 you will have to buy a suitable USB dongle or access point. smokie36
Thanks for clarifying Darrel. What do you mean by "a suitable access point" ?
Darrel
An access point at its simplest is a device that provides an interface between wifi and wired ethernet. So you can connect one to the ethernet socket on your PC and (once configured) it will act as a wifi receiver for that PC. Most access points have numerous other functions which makes them extremely useful, but you do need to read the box/manual to see what they can do, and how to configure them. A decent one might cost around 1000-2000B. A simple USB wifi dongle would be cheaper (just a few hundred , assuming that you only want to use it to connect your PC to the existing wifi.
