Is there a way to import the GPS version of this map into Garmin's Mapsource software?

Assuming the map is supplied as an IMG file, for example gmapprom.img or gmapsupp.img, then the answer is YES. There are programs available to import IMG files into MapSource.

Garmin's BaseCamp is reported to import maps directly from your GPS.

I tried using GmapTool for that. It split apart the gmapsupp.img file successfully and created the installation files, but then when I start up Mapsource it tells me that the maps are locked and it won't let me use them.

In MapSource click on "Utilities" and enter 25 character unlock code. You will need an unlock code generator, available on the internet.

If you download Garmin's basecamp software, with your Garmin gps connected to your computer, you should be able to view the map in basecamp on your computer.

Thanks for that. After some playing around I finally got your North Thailand Map to load into Mapsource. The thing that initially seemed to be tripping things up was that there appeared to be no FID code embedded in the mapset and unless I manually set an FID code when splitting the files for Mapsource it was a no-go.

BTW, when I bought the maps it came on a SD card with no documentation. What are the licensing terms on this product? I have only one GPS unit and will be sharing the maps with no one, so I assume that it's legal for me to hack on them however I want in order to use them on my PC and on my GPS unit. Is that a good assumption? I only ask because I ran into the need for an unlock code when working with Mapsource, and I'm not sure if that's because of a technical issue with Mapsource or because of copy protection on your mapset.

OP - Under Thai law it is copyrighted for 50 years - illegal to copy but can be used in different Garmin GPS's - it's not locked to one GPS unit.

Yes, I was figuring that Thai copyright law would apply. Sometimes end user agreements involve restrictions on use beyond the minimum set forth by copyright law. Sounds like in this case as long as the maps are used only by one person there is no issue.

Correct OP - sold for your sole use

That pesky FID code will trip you up every time if not careful.

In case you use GMapTool, the FID and PID shold be shown when on the "Add File" tab you click on the "Info" button. Just to make things more easy for those of you who need to know the FID and PID these are as follows:

FID = 1897 and PID = 1

I only ask because I ran into the need for an unlock code when working with Mapsource, and I'm not sure if that's because of a technical issue with Mapsource or because of copy protection on your mapset.

The unlock code is a Garmin annoyance created to make them more money. In the good old days you could only purchase the unlock code from Garmin.

When you do that, this is what you get:

Data MPS

V: North Thailand RC V1 Beta, maps.three15.org 601610 (1)

F: PID 1, FID 1897, NORTHARC1

F: PID 1, FID 6621, Topo SEAsia

At first I thought that GmapTool was failing because there was no FID in the img file, but actually it was because there are two FID's. I found that when splitting the img file, if I specified a random 3 digit FID to override the FID's in the img file, then GMapTool would succeed and it would be possible to load the maps into mapsource.
