Bangkok Pattaya Hospital

I'm in the BPH right now and having a problem between my insurance and the hospital about room prices. I changed my policy at AIA 18 months ago to a higher level, the level from BPH. I'm insured for 10000/night now but after 18 months it is again not enough. They could only offer me a 15000 baht room which is 8 times more than 6 years ago.. My question is to all the people in Pattaya who where recently in the Bangkok Pattaya Hospital what they paid for there room. I have the feeling that they charge me to much because I hear also stories for room prices from about 5200 Baht.

Thanks in advance,

Ron

I don't believe it!!!

I have been admitted to the Bangkok Hospital Pattaya on 5 occasions over the last four years, always for two or three nights each time. My private room bill (room only) has been around 2,300 baht per night and never more that 2,500 baht per night!

I don't know what room the other poster had for 2,500 B in the BPH. Might have been a broom cupboard. It also depends on the level of nursing you are getting but you'll be looking at between 8,000 to 10,000 plus baht for very basic stuff going up to 50,000 baht if you need intensive stuff. If you still can, get the hell out of there before they seriously damage your wealth.

All I know is that my insurance company will not carry Bangkok Pattaya Hospital ;yet it will carry Bumrungrad Hospital in BKK. Believe it or not, Bumrungrad is cheaper than Pattaya Bangkok Hospital in most items. (and compare the doctor's degree with that of bumrungrad...very few of Bangkok Pattaya Hospital doctors have degrees from Europe or North America; whereas in Bumrungrad, most of them have furthured their education in some Western country. Bangkok Pattaya is going crazy with their prices because of the new building.

When you stay in BKK Patt hospital you can choose to stay in the old building or new, huge difference in prices. When insurance involved they will normal go full throttle.

Yes it is getting too expensive there now, also heard about dual pricing system for foreigners/Thais, not acceptable they will have to be careful or they will loose customers (prices go further up. lol).

I know about a guy who needed a heart by-pass operation and he ended up getting it in Bangkok at 1/3 price as here and he is well today.

Don't forget : Its a business and not much else.

I have to rectify my first post. BPH is also reading this forum so I got an extra explaination. The 15000 Baht where the expected cost per day including room etc. The room rate is only 5300 Baht. I think it was a misunderstanding from me (farang non English and sick) and a BPH thai (non english) person.

My excuses,

Ron

The rooms are actually in the range of 2500 as mentioned, the hospital will quote you based on the level of care you require, but doesn't come off your allowance for "An en suite room"

As suggested, get your insurance company to sort it out.. Any stay in the hospital you are usually entitled to have direct billing.

"a misunderstanding from me (farang non English and sick) and a BPH thai (non english) person."

Contact Dr. Iain Corness ( a Brit ) in their foreign services dept on the 2nd floor. He can make sense out of much of the normal confusion with the staff at BPH. He's generally there on weekdays until 12:00 noon.

You can also get a 10% discount on rooms, medications, and some other items/services if you have a Pattaya Expats Club membership card - only 600 Baht for a lifetime membership.

A friend of ours broke a leg whilst visiting and ended up with a horrendous bill from PBH. One item on the bill was 1 x Paracetamol tablet, charge Baht 1,000

On the subject of ridiculous prices for medication at BHP how about this -

I recently had a throat problem - came on very suddenly and was painful enough to prevent me swallowing anything other than water and even that was a struggle. A local doctor gave me the usual assorted pills which, frankly, didn't do very much. At my wife's insistence I ended up going to the ENT clinic at BHP.

I was pretty unimpressed with the lady doctor that I saw - didn't seem to want to listen to anything that I had to say and was only interested in shoving an endoscope up my nose. The endoscopy allegedly showed that I had a 'deviated nasal septum' although on the video of the procedure that they sold me I can't see any evidence of this and it would probably not be relevant anyway. The endoscopy also showed some inflammation of the pharynx but nothing else untoward.

The diagnosis - if you can call it that - was basically that I had a sore throat! Yes, well I think I knew that already. When I asked the possible cause I was told that I might have acid reflux and would need to take some medication.

The total bill was around 5000฿, which I felt wasn't too bad but when I got home and looked up the medication on the internet I found that I had been charged 1600฿ for what were basically Omeprazole indigestion tablets! This price represents a mark-up of about 600% over the normal pharmacy price! This is a disgrace but I suppose they have to pay for the 5* hotel environment somehow!

The medication had absolutely no effect, by the way, but the problem eventually went away on its own. Took quite a few weeks though and I've still no idea what caused it.

looked up the medication on the internet I found that I had been charged 1600฿ . . . This price represents a mark-up of about 600% over the normal pharmacy price!

One of the largest pharmacies in Pattaya-- Fascino, is only a couple of kilometers away from BPH on North Pattaya Road (Pattaya Nua). I always have the doctor write down the name of the meds and instruct him/her *NOT* to enter the prescription into their computer-- however if they do it anyway, you can always refuse the meds when you pay the bill. Some doctors resist and make comments like "that's not good for the hospital", but you need to persist.

BPH pharmacy sometimes sells imported brand-name meds (highest priced), but locally produced or generic brands-- available at Fascino and other pharmacies, are equally effective and much cheaper.

I went to BPH with my girlfriend. She has decided she needs a nose-job.

Was quoted 12,000 baht. 5 minutes later, they realized she was not thai

(she is Vietnamese, but speaks pretty decent Thai). Than they said sorry,

for foreigners it is 18,000 baht !

BPH was always on the top of my list as health care provider. But after

this blatant insult, I will not go back to that place.

Cheers,

rudi

Believe me, if I'd realised at the time that they were selling me extortionately priced indigestion tablets I would not have paid for them. I do normally use Fascino - never had any problems there and their prices seem very fair, especially if you have their discount card.

I think my stay was around that per night. I had two major surgeries, spent 6 days in the hospital and the total bill was somewhere around 275,000 thb. I've had multiple surgeries due to cancer and I have to say, that my surgeries and recovery at BPH were the smoothest I've ever had. BPH IMO really does a good job in the surgery department. Much different than the US. I had no labs drawn after surgery. No nurses waking me up every few hours to take vitals. They pretty much left me alone unless I needed something. An aide would check on about 3 times a day. I found my stay to be very restful and healing. I had the same exact surgery a year prior at a supposed top hospital in the US and it was a nightmare. The surgeon at BPH basically had to redo everything the first surgeon did.

I am sorry ,but I do not understand peoples fascination .with"private hospitals" I have lived here , permanently ,since 1989- I have NEVER been anywhere near a private hospital. I have always been a patient at Government hospitals. I have received excellent treatment. Most ,if not all doctors in Thailand are ALL trained at the same teaching Hospitals. With hospitals ,like Bumrungrad, yes, they are foreign trained. If a private hospital doctor does not speak very good English ,he is NOT foreign trained. He is exactly equivalent to a Government Hospital,in his "knowledge". That means he/she has the same level of competence ,as your local Government Hospital Doctor. As he/she has been trained in the same teaching hospitals.

Off topic posts removed, anymore will get deleted and the warning trolley will be wheeled out.

The OP is asking how much he should be paying for a room that's all.

I wonder if Bumrungrad does this farang picing too? I am a bit like you, BPH was my preferred health care provider but now I go to Bumrungrad in BKK.

Like you I have had to have cancer treatment at BPH and the treatment I have had has been first class. My cost was roughly 200.000thb..plus chemo sessions which I didnt dare look at the price. The problem is sometimes our illness dosnt allow us to travel to Bkk and outwith pattaya. I would have hated to have had to travel during chemo sessions. It was as quick as I could get home and travelling every week would just have been impossible. I,m back tomorrow for another op and I know I will be looked after and left in peace to recover.

One of my medications cannot be bought from a chemist They must be from the hospital but I just tell them I will buy the rest from the chemist and they are fine about it.. But it is funny when you get your bill and a plaster @5thb and cotton wool ball @ 2 thb is itemised.

I dont believe in Dual and triple pricing though. It should be one price for all. One thing I do notice there are plenty of Thai use it as well as westerners.

Dr. Corness is Australian although he qualified in the UK. Not a few of we long time residents have mixed feelings about him.

He told me he's from Britain, but practiced medicine in Australia for 30+ years. Can't imagine what your "mixed feelings" would be -- he's always been very helpful to me - especially in recommending specific doctors or specialists. Going directly through him allows me to avoid having to deal with the staff, which can be frustrating and confusing at best. In my opinion, BPH would be much worse off without him.
