Some Electricians may be able to advise TV Members of the dangers and how to fix it before flooding hits their home.

I know most homes in Thailand do not have an Earth wire in their home, and a lot dont have circuit breakers.

This is why you hear of people being electricuted when the power points are submerged or the wires are in the flood water.

I had earth wires run from my power box and circuit breakers installed.

I also had earth wire installed on the hot water service in the shower and a further circuit breaker fitted.

Be careful out there, you wont get a second chance with high voltage.

I would say a submerged thing will cut itself and is just a small problem if you keep distance and I think 30 cm might be enough. But never touch anything electric while you stay in the water. Not even change the light bulb. Don't disconnect the computer.

Young healthy you might take the 220 Volt for a short time without any problem 95 % chance. But you may stick to it or be one of the 5 %.

Don't take the risk to save 5000 Baht, your funeral will cost more.

First and foremost in the event of water entering your property:

SWITCH OFF THE ELECTRICITY SUPPLY AT THE METER.

Or at the first main breaker that supplies the fuse box.

Most people on this Forum would know what it is like to touch your computer with no shoes on standing on the tiles YEOWwwww. Small tingle. Well imagine 220 volt standing in water. You wont remember it.

A far better move -move to where you cannot flood, as i did.1995 was horrendous. 4 months flooded we were .Wont go into the sordid details. Now I live in a flood proof environment. Lovely

You obviously don't understand water mixed with electricity at mains power of 220-240V

Water is a conductor of electricity and when the two come together it's irrelevant what the distance is 30cm or 30 meters

YOU WILL BE ELECTROCUTED and don't think it will cut itself out cos it will be too late.

Total misinformation. I am a trained electrician and i still remember a few things from college.

If you are 30 meters away from the discharge, then how the hell are you meant to be in contact with the cable or appliance that it is discharging from? Unless of course you are standing in water and your arms are 30 meters long.

If you are standing in water and you put your hand or any other part of your body in contact with something electrical, there is 'a possibility' that you are presenting yourself as an easier route to earth in which case the current will pass through your body. But if you were merely standing in water, then the current discharged and found its way to you, you would not die, in fact you would possibly only get some superficial burns on your leg at the worst.

If you were in a swimming pool and someone threw in a TV, it would probably not kill you either because chances are you are floating in the water and isolated from earth.

If you were in the bath, and someone threw a toaster in, and all the breakers were disabled and so nothing can trip out, then really, you are at a bigger risk, but the current would need to be picked up by a hand or an arm, which will send the current up your arm and across your heart. It takes approx 8 amps to stop your heart causing death by electrocution. Trust me, I have had plenty of electric shocks in my time, it is an occupational hazard.

so anyway... so long as your hand is not touching the source of power then you should be ok. You HAVE you be in contact with the source, or if a live cable is floating in the water, then your hand or arm needs to be near it to get it to pass through your heart.

I have seen a guy get a 10 second jolt from an 11 KVA cable and live, although he wasn't holding his golf clubs very straight afterwords seeing as it cooked 40% of his right arm.

He doesn't, I don't wish to spark off a tiff but he's been arguing with me in another thread regarding this very same topic and I finally gave up but now I can't stand by idly and let his dangerous advice continue to permeate the board as it's just plain deadly rubbish that's going to get people killed if they follow it..

Your post is correct but you overlooked the need for you to be grounded which is quite to easy to happen if you reach out and touch the nearest thing for balance to support yourself or if you're barefooted in the water for example.

Most houses here have metal security doors try and open one of them while standing in charged water and see what happens? On second thought definitely do not do that..

Yeah well.... some people watch too many Hollywood movies....lol

When flooding occurs electricity supply cut off from the main source, stop the scare mongering.

Watch to many movies quote correct.
