QUETTA, PAKISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- A Pakistan Air Force (PAF) fighter jet crashed in a mountainous region in the southern part of the country on Wednesday, killing the pilot, officials said.

According to the PAF, the Daussalt Mirage 5 aircraft suffered a technical malfunction during an operational training flight and crashed near the town of Uthal in the Lasbela District of Balochistan Province, Pakistan Today reported.

There were no casualties on the ground, the report said, adding that an investigation into the cause of the accident has been launched. The identity of the victim was also not immediately released.

The Daussalt Mirage 5 aircraft is a fighter jet designed by the French Daussault Aviation. The PAF also carries Chinese-built aircraft in its fleet, including F-7PGs and A-5s, as well as F-16s, which are made in the U.S. It recently acquired medium-tech JF-17 or Thunder jets, manufactured jointly by Pakistan and China.
