I'm hoping medications to shrink the prostate will make urinating a more pleasant experience for me.

I would like to hear from anyone who has tried these meds and the results. Plus, any side effects.

Have you had a proper work up to rule out prostate cancer? As that is the first step.

Once confirmed that it is ebnign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) then indeed there are medications which are often effective. But must rule out cancer first.

I was diagnosed with BPH 10 years ago. The symptoms wernt bad then, but unpleasant now.

I guess Ive been putting off a cancer check because all the men in my family have died of prostate cancer.

Ill have to consider a checkup.

Good advice from Sheryl and the Drs/hospitals in Khon Kaen are as good as anywhere in the country do get off your rear end and have a check-up.

With a family hx of prostate cancer the matter becomes quite urgent. See a specialist at once. Get a PSA and a biopsy. Them if it is benign, you can proceed with BPH treatment with confidence. if it is cancer, you'll find many threads with useful info and doc recommendations on this forum. treatment options have advanced considerably in recent years.

One thing to be aware of when taking the meds to reduce the size of the prostate, is that they artificially lower the PSA reading. I took them for a while following a wrong diagnosis (apparently my GP in the UK when giving me the ''finger-dinger'' test was touching the bladder not the prostate). We all make mistakes. Fortunately the urologist at Bumrungrad put me on the right track.

Get the tests done asap, plenty of treatments available, and an excellent survival rate.

Sheryl has given the best advice to you so far.

This year I have had two operations to correct urine flow. Cancer has been ruled out from the first investigation surgery. I am also taking Duodart to improve the flow. Unfortunately this intervention hasn't worked and I need to go for a third operation to reduce the swollen prostate. After this operation I am told I won't require the medication. Its a process of elimination.

There are side effects from both medicine and the operations. With the pills I have found a reduced libido and the operation sperm can at times shoot backwards not forwards. But what you need to way up is how your current stream is affected now as it won't improve any further.

I can only agree to get everything checked out, and if in Thailand, Hospitals and surgeons are very good. Just see if anyone else has had similar work as they may be able to recommend. Good luck
