Has anyone had experience of using their iPad (3G) while driving for GPS ? Also, what maps do you find most effective ?

Thank you

You do realize that most of Thailand does not have 3G coverage yet.

I put in '3G' as I understand the WiFi model does not have GPS and the 3G does ?

The A-GPS in the 3G iPad needs cell phone tower data to operate to its full capabilities. As with all things bandwidth related, Thailand comes up a degree short with it's country wide 2G network.

I use TomTom Thailand (offline navigation) often on my Iphone, works fine. I also have 2 Garmin units and there is no big difference between. The TomTom App works great,on the Ipad it even supports dual view (junction view only in BKK and map) since the last update.

Garmin units bought outside of Thailand doesn't support junction view at all, which is why I prefer the Iphone in Bangkok.

However GPS reception and lock on is better and faster on the newer Garmin units compared to the Iphone.

Hi thanks for that but when I go to itunes I get this page which seems Tom Tom has stopped (end of life ?) HERE

I used my iPhone 3G, iPhone 4 and iPad 3G with the built-in GPS and Google Maps in Thailand to drive around just about everywhere. It works like a charm. Edge has always been sufficient to update Google Maps.

And in case you are worried about being caught off line ... try "CityMaps2Go" which allows you to download maps and POIs of cities to your iPhone and then navigate around offline.

Hi JoiPai,

try a search with TomTom Asia

Perfect - thank you :jap:

*** MAPS COVERAGE ***

- SG, MY, ID, TH, BN.

More than I need, just the TH map is sufficient !

I bought a Garmin unit in HK and an ESRI Thailand map (V10) from Eagle in Chang Mai and the junction view works fine all over Thailand.

I think you have junction view mixed up with something else. For starters Thai OS junction view is only available for Bangkok on the V10 map.

Or maybe because it's an asian OS!
