Security measures beefed up in metropolitan areas

BANGKOK: -- Security measures have been reinforced in metropolitan areas to prevent any undesirable incidents during festivities in coming weeks.

Armed Forces Chief Gen. Ruengroj Mahasaranond told journalists after chairing a meeting of top-brass military and police officers here on Tuesday that he had instructed military and police units to be on alert and keep vigilant at important and public places, as well as community areas in the capital when the year-end festivities are approaching.

"I've ordered them to tighten security measures with more deployment of officers at public places and community areas in the metropolitan areas in preparation for any incidents," he said.

"Reinforced security measures should be well in place not only in the country's troubled southern border region, but also in the capital and other cities across the nation," he added.

The supreme commander of the Royal Thai Armed Forces said vigilance of the security officers would cover their intelligence units.

Gen. Ruengroj has also asked the general public to provide tip-offs to the state security officers when they come across any suspicious incidents.
