ACCRA (BNO NEWS) -- The death toll as a result of severe flooding in the Ghanaian capital of Accra and the surrounding region has reached at least 10, officials said on Friday. Others have been injured.

The flooding began on late Tuesday evening when heavy rainfall hit large parts of the Greater Accra Region which includes the cities of Accra and Tema. Water reached window levels in some areas as residents desperately tried to save their property.

Ghana government officials said the death toll rose to ten on Friday after an unidentified body was found floating in the Odawna River. The flooding on Tuesday and Wednesday was the worst the region has seen in years, causing a number of buildings and bridges to collapse.

Accra is in a low-lying area and frequently experiences floods during the rainy season which runs from July through November. Climate experts believe the entire region could be permanently underwater within the next 80 years.
