MAKRO secures one million bottles of drinking water from local supply to overcome shortages

The Nation

MAKRO has geared up for new challenges of a twofold increase in consumer demand through local supply from community.

MAKRO, the cash & carry wholesale centre, confirms there has been no hoarding and goods in heavy demand will be distributed to every store to alleviate shortages and meet requirements efficiently and effectively.

The recent flooding in Greater Bangkok has triggered an abrupt high demand of certain consumer and consumption goods such as eggs, rice, drinking water, canned fish and instant noodles. Despite news that these goods are in short supply and not available at some outlets, MAKRO is able to sustain supply for members and consumers at large.

Supply of goods will stream into MAKRO stores without disruption to meet specific demands by flood-affected people in Bangkok and upcountry.

Ms. Pariyanuch Na Taguatung, Marketing Director of Siam Makro Public Company Limited revealed that MAKRO exerted mightily to ensure the growing demand for drinking water is met. "MAKRO joins hands with the Internal Trade Department to secure supply of one million bottles of drinking water from local supply from community."

"More than 400,000 bottles are now available at MAKRO stores in Bangkok. The one million mark will be accomplished early next week from over 15 upcountry sources such as Hadyai, Surat, Nakornsawan, Ubonratchathani and Konkaen, Moreover, MAKRO has contracted supply of about 500,000 bottles per week of 'Aura' mineral drinking water from Mae Rim" added Ms. Pariyanuch.

In the face of the current flooding crisis, she said, the demand for eggs went up twofold, mainly from MAKRO members in the core group of small retailer shop, hotel, restaurant, and catering businesses. "We are selling local supply of eggs and our suppliers are part of the Eggs Producers Association. And in line with the Commerce Ministry's policy, the first imported batch of 600,000 eggs from Malaysia will arrive late this week."

"They will be sold at the same price as their domestic counterpart products to mitigate flood victims' burdens. As for canned fish, rice, and instant noodles, our business alliances assure us they can meet the demand on a daily basis without any looming threat of shortages," Ms. Pariyanuch added.

"MAKRO will make an all-out effort to adequately meet the demand and distribute consumer and consumption goods to every region, particularly flood-ravaged areas. All MAKRO stores throughout the country will remain open even in the flooding areas" assured Ms. Pariyanuch

Siam Makro Public Company Limited was established in May 1988 as the first and only Cash & Carry wholesale centre for professional business operators, and registered under one single name of "MAKRO", throughout Thailand.

The core focus is to provide a variety of competitively priced, quality products and develop services to meet the demands of small to medium size businesses, predominantly small retailers, HoReCa (Hotel, Restaurant and Catering), foodservice institutions, professional customers and also the service sectors. Today MAKRO operates a total of 52 stores throughout Thailand.

Goos news for people who live or can get to a Makro store. Nor much good for the rest of us who can't even get out from their flooded homes.

My humble calculation:

10 Mio people in BKK and each drink 1-2 bottles a day (1.5 l bottles).

So 1 Mio bottles are covering average 7.5 % of the daily water consumption in BKK?

And 600,000 eggs from Malaysia arriving late this week, suggests maybe 600,000 eggs will arrive per week, meaning there'll be a total of 1 egg per 100 people every week.

Perhaps just for show?

" "More than 400,000 bottles are now available at MAKRO stores in Bangkok. "

Gee wiz...

How many people living in Bangkok again ?

Estimated 15 million or so?

So that's a whopping 0.02 bottle of water per person.

Ok - not all can get to a Makro shop.

And those who needed to and could, have most likely left Bkk by now.

So lets just say its around 0.05 bottle of water per person.

Luckily Makro is not the only store in town...

The government could perhaps introduce the system I remember from my youth in the U.K concerning the allocation of supplies.

"MAKRO takes 1 million bottles of water out of local supplies and limits distribution points to a few stores instead of letting every corner's street vendor sell them."

For anyone looking for water, the usual outlets are problematic- like 7-11, Big C, TESCO, etc.. But I walk past street vendors selling 6 packs and 12 packs on most streets every day. There were plenty of vendors in the Klong Toey market with 12 packs last weekend. I walked a few blocks on Asok around Sukhumvit at lunch today and saw 2 vendors with cases and cases sitting in their stands with signs saying 10 baht each bottle and 120 baht per 12 pack.

You lot are fuc_king unbelievable.. Makro get their act together and try and ensure supply at no extra costs and you winge.... IF it's available in Makro then it can get to where it's needed.. If it's unavailable then the flood victims are right royally fuc_ked. As for the many vendors selling the water.. How much are they selling for 60b per 6 pack? or 100-150b per 6 pack.

Coincidentally, your first calculation matches that of the daily capacity of the USS George Washington for its potable water production.

It's a shame they weren't asked by the government to stay.

In the Mall Bangkapi today and the shelves were well-stocked with all foodstuffs. Very few people though, I think a lot of people have left town. Neighbours came back from Rayong today because they said there were food shortages down there. Perhaps the supply chain in BKK is improving.

I have to agree that they are doing some thing.

But when you look at the facts it is not even a drop in the bucket.

%7.50 of one days need and it will take a week before it gets to the Macro stores is not worth the headlines it is grabbing.

What will they be charging? Hopefully normal prices. It would be nice if they were to set up a hand out system for free like take them directly to the camps where people are going to need them.

That would have been a headline worth running.

Do they want me to write a article about myself. I have given money good enough for a month to my wife's son who is stuck in a camp until the water gets out of his home and God only knows if he will have a job to go to.

Hopefully I am not alone in that. To give goods or money for the government to distribute is iffy at best. All though I heard Yingluck was in a boat distributing goods. didn't say what she did with the money.

Well said. Too many complainers on here. Plenty of water in central BKK. I saw at least 10 people selling water today and they all had 100s of 6-packs.

For crying out loud, talk about stretching a connection! For weeks now all we have seen on these forums is slagging off the efforts to cope with the flood crisis. Now someone is trying to do something and you turn on them. I know it's a fraction of what is needed but it is better than nothing, and it has the cube root of bugger all to do with the colour red, you bigot.

Not at all, I just recognise a bigot when I see one. Less of the abuse perhaps?
