Commerce Ministry Provides Cheaply-Priced Products for BKK Residents

The Commerce Ministry and the private sector are selling necessity goods at controlled prices to help flood victims.

They have given assurances that there are enough goods for distribution but say that transportation may be slow because many roads remain submerged.

Deputy Commerce Minister Poom Sarapol said the goods offered at the Market Organization for Farmers or the ‘Or Tor Gor’ market are necessity items and are being sold at controlled prices.

For example, eggs are being sold at 90 baht per tray with a limit of two trays per person, five-kilogram rice bags at 99 to 172 baht per bag, pork at 100 baht per kilogram, chicken at 50 baht per kilogram, and one-liter bottles of cooking oil at 38 baht.

The Internal Trade Department will be hosting 13 blue flag fairs throughout Bangkok.

At least one million eggs and one million bottles of drinking water will be available every week.

The minister assured there will be enough goods, but said that transportation has been difficult due to roads being submerged.

CP Chief Operating Officer Pong Wisetpaitoon said the company will be distributing eggs in 14 additional spots throughout the country.

He noted that CP brought 100,000 eggs to be sold at the ‘Or Tor Gor’ market yesterday from farms in Saraburi, Lopburi, and Nakhon Ratchasima.

Those who showed up to buy products said they are stocking up in case their homes get flooded and they are happy with the prices of the products being sold, as they are ten percent lower than the market price.

The minister has asked the Internal Trade Department to send out 15 teams everyday to check the prices of products in flooded areas to make sure there is no overpricing or hoarding.

Such practices can be reported via the hotline 1569 24 hours a day.

1. YS lacks management experience. Doesn't understand administrative mechanisms & tools at both provincial/local levels.

2 Instead of declaring state of emergency to tackle floods, YS has resorted to natural disaster law under Interior Ministry's jurisdiction.

3 Flood Relief Operation Centre is run by personnel who are not qualified for the jobs. Interior Ministry has no role.

4. In spite of people's hardship, Govt still wants to win votes by focusing more on distributing flood relief bags to red shirts supporters.

5. YS and Froc don't understand the geography of Thailand, the waterways.

6 Govt has no priorities over which areas to protect from floods. Govt focuses on helping industries instead of people.

7. Govt's sloppy relief operation is evident by its evacuation of people to areas where floods would eventually make their way to.

8 Govt and Froc fail to tell public the truth about water volumes. The language is too bureaucratic for common people to understand.

9 Froc and BMA get into political squabbling resulting in complete failure to tackle floods.

10 Govt is separating police force from military force. Police have not been assigned to do military job.

11 Govt sends out confusing signals and information to public, repeating same old information back and forth.

12 Digging holes through the roads to let the water flow is necessary. Govt has refused to try this option.

That sums up my rough translation of the Military's 12-point critique of YS government http://bit.ly/tryUt8

RT @ThanongK: Channel 3 reported that Or-Ngern-Sai Mai route and Watcharaphol were strewn with spikes on roads to block bus transport.

RT @ThanongK: Bus wheels exploded from spikes. This spike strategy is used in three southern provinces. We are seeing in BKK now.

SET Drafts Plan to Rebuild Confidence Among Foreign Investors

The Stock Exchange of Thailand is planning to report on the current flood situation to foreign investors abroad with traveling exhibitions.

President of the Stock Exchange of Thailand Jarumporn Chotikasatien has announced that the SET will organize traveling exhibitions to report on the current flood situation to foreign investors abroad, particularly in Singapore, Hong Kong, New York and Tokyo.

Jarumporn said that the exhibitions will be held once the government has a new flood prevention plan in order to regain investors' confidence.

Moreover, the SET must also first determine how quickly the flood-hit industrial sector can resume production.

In addition, SET Chairman Sompol Kietpaiboon expects that representatives from the SET and listed firms will meet with Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra next week to report on progress being made in establishing a flood assistance fund.

They are looking to discuss how the fund will be used in order to avoid overlapping efforts with existing governmental aid.

The SET will also inquire as to how the government is planning to assist companies that have been affected in the disaster.

At the moment, the SET and listed companies have already collected more than 400 million baht, with a goal of 500 million baht.

The fund committee will plan how to best spend the fund, both immediately and in providing post-flood assistance.

Flood Donation Fraudsters Arrested

Nakhon Ratchasima police arrest two people suspected of running a scam in which they disguised themselves as rescue officers and collected donations for flood relief efforts.

Nakhon Ratchasima provincial police questioned 30-year-old Nan native, Vasukoon Meeaun, and 40-year-old Nakhon Ratchasima resident, Prakong Kaengkarn after they were found to be impersonating volunteer rescue officers and collecting donations for flood victims.

They were found wearing shirts with the logo of a rescue foundation on them and were found to be in possession of 180 baht in cash as well as a number of relief packages.

Jor Hor District Chief of Police, Police General Chanat Kaweekaochalard reported that many complaints had been made about the two suspects impersonating foundation rescue officers and supposedly raising funds for flood relief operations.

During an initial interrogation, the two admitted that they had disguised themselves by wearing rescue foundation team shirts and were collecting around 1,000 to 2,000 baht daily.

Chanat suggested that those who want to donate for the flood relief efforts should do so via reputable charity organizations.

Should residents see any suspicious activity, they should report it to the police immediately.

Gov't Denies Buying Relief Packages At Elevated Prices

The spokesperson at the Interior Ministry said relief packages from the Flood Relief Operations Center, or FROC, cost 800 baht each, pointing out that they also contain canned food and a large bag of rice.

Spokesman of the Interior Ministry, Pipatchai Paiboon, denied claims made by the deputy spokesman of the Democrat Party, Sakontee Patthiyakul, that FROC purchased relief packages at a higher than usual price.

He confirmed that supplies in each relief package cost 800 baht as each package contains a 5-kilogram bag of rice, 6 cans of instant rice, and many other canned goods.

He went on to say that the prices of these items can be verified and compared with market prices, to see whether they are worth 800 bath, adding that the rice alone is worth more than 100 baht.

He further confirmed that the quality of the supplies are similar to those on the market and that rumors that they include expired canned fish are untrue.
