Thai PM To Skip APEC Summit Due To Flood Crisis

"Still aftere the attempted lambasting her side gave Abhisit for taking the first well deserved weekend off he's had in years, then it would be political suicide for her to leave for dry land and catered meals ANYWHERE. Abhisit had no official powers to be seen walking out on, but she most certainly does."

1) my heart is bleeding for the ex- PM!

2) I guess, you could hardly compare a holiday with a scheduled meeting of Asean head of states.

3) Oh wait...sure you can. After all AV met the President of the Maledives to officially discuss the floods, and as we all know, the Maledives have a whole army of flood experts.

4) But wait...this can't be! He has no official powers, so why should he discuss matters with ...

5) Oh, I got it...because Thaksin might show up at the Asean summit and he has no political powers, too. So if he can, AV can , too!

6) Too bad, she is not going, otherwise I can imagine what will be going on, in this forum.

I assumed as much.

Of course they could.

As if they ever have the same flood problem.

Exactly he was a free mand to take a vacation and a meeting with anyone he wished.

Yes, and not hardly.

I doubt you can, but suspect you want us to believe that.

As an American, I am a bit offended that YS will go to ASEAN in Bali, but not spend her Thai Bhat on American goods in Hawaii. After all, we gave money and assistance during the flooding crisis. The least she could do is go to America and re-pay the favor by buying some of our products... perhaps some new designer boots, in case the Burberry's are getting worn out these days?! Maybe an iPhone/iPad (although I heard there were some delays for components suppliers).

Please tell me you are joking...

C'mon now... just a little dark humor!

Looks like he DOES have to be TOLD thou arte joking.

Just out of curiousity, what has a Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation ( APEC) to do with Hawai?Just another organisation to scam the taxpayer I guess.

The "P" means "Pacific" as in Pacific Ocean. The USA is considered part of the "Pacific Ocean" community of nations due to it's wester coast being the Pacific Ocean. Hawaii also happens to be surrounded by the Pacific Ocean.

President Obama will be at the meeting and also visiting Indonesia and Australia. The USA, a PACIFIC nation, considers the Asian region top priority.

Yes ... this is a big playing field for the rivalry between the USA and China.

Just wondering if a Thai PM, past or present, has any contribution of significance to an APEC meet other than that holding-hands photo of course.

But Hawaii or the US aren't a member. Why one would hold meetings outside it's members country's?

Of course it is ... Are you one of Robert Amsterdam's grad students ?

Every APEC meeting, the host country provides local shirts for all the participants to wear for their group photo. They are having it in Hawaii because everyone wants a Hawaiian shirt.

Screwed if she does. Screwed if she doesn't.

It's definitely a twofer. Nobody in any modern nation will see what an idiot she is and she plays to the home crowd for pretending to care about their suffering. If i were advising her, I'd have told her the exact same thing. Give it a pass.

Do remember her brother left the country once to attend a U.N, meeting and was declared surplus to requirements whilst away, she's probably been told to " sit tight no action replays wanted ."..

You hit the nail Right on the Head......... Dont make the same mistake twice.....!

Thaksin wasn't even the Prime Minister at the time of that UN trip. He was only the Caretaker PM.

Perhaps if Yingluck had decided to go to the APEC meeting in Hawaii she might well have been photographed in something more fetching than a poncho (he reminds me of the man with no name).

Jingthing,

Be a good chap and point out where I stated that "Thaksin was the Prime minister or a Prime Minister " at the time of his being declared surplus to requirements in my post please...

It was implied that there are similar political situations going on now making a trip abroad a threat of coup. When that is simply not true. 2006 was 2006. Today is today. I don't question Yingluck's decision not to go, but it had nothing to do with 2006.

So one more thing I've been noticing over the past 3 weeks... we have seen Yingluck make some decisions... and not all of them have been good ones (or even half-baked, for that matter). But they are decisions, and while they seem to come from limited experience, they come with a lot of heart. But I was always under the impression that a PM had a cadre of advisers and ministers. Especially in a parliamentary system where the party gets voted into pwer, and the picks its favorite face to lead the party as the prime minister. So... where the hell is the supporting cast? Has anyone heard from Chalerm since water was first seen in the vicinity of Ayuthaya? And that Jatuporn guy... what has he done lately to make the citizens of Thailand say "thank god I voted red"?

I implied nothing, your interpretation of the matter was, is pure conjecture and speculation on your part as is your answer.

Jatuporn got a nice write up in todays Bangkok Post Opinion page. Check the article entitled "Red Shirts Split At Seams".

It would be a mistake to assume that Yingluck sits there surrounded by her loyal ministers in a traditional government manner. She didn't stop being a clone the minute the crisis broke, though forum red cheerleaders would prefer that you did. They continue to defend her but prefer a firebreak to defend Thaksin their primary consideration.

Good point. The question remains: How long can Thaksin be perceived as a viable solution to the country's challenges? Reconciliation under him seems improbable (although, I put no depth of transformation beyond his capability!). The PAD and DP seem to have had a parting of the ways during the recent elections. The UDD is becoming factionalized. So now what? Returning to a Thaksin-led govt might just be like drinking Pepto Bismol: it coats, soothes and relieves... but the underlying ulcer is still there.
