Landmine explodes on Syria-Lebanon border

2011-11-13 05:25:42 GMT+7 (ICT)

TRIPOLI (BNO NEWS) -- A young Lebanese man has become the first casualty of landmines planted by Syrian troops along the Syria-Lebanon border, the Daily Star reported on its website on Saturday.

Ayman al-Owaishi, 24, was wounded on Friday when he stepped on a landmine planted in the border town of Amayra in the Wadi Khaled region of north Lebanon. A security source said he was receiving treatment after being rushed to a hospital.

President Michel Sleiman confirmed earlier this week that the Syrian Army had planted landmines along the border with Lebanon. They have allegedly been planted to prevent arms smuggling along the border and Syrian dissidents from crossing into Lebanon.

Thousands of Syrian nationals have been seeking refuge across the border in Lebanon due to the escalating political and human rights crisis in Syria.

The violence in Syria has continued despite the Syrian government accepting an Arab League plan last week to end the country's social unrest. The government had agreed to pull its army off the streets, release people jailed since the protests began and allow international journalists and Arab League observers to monitor the moves.

Pro-democracy demonstrations have spread across the country since mid-March, resulting in a fierce government crackdown which has left more than 3,500 people killed. The Syrian government has claimed violent acts against protesters have been carried out by 'terrorists dressed as soldiers,' although international observers have rejected these claims.

Not a word from the usual gang on the use of landmines by Syria. :o

Surely, they would have trotted out a justification for the use of them on the border of a non hostile nation.

The USA still has landmines, but hasn't laid them along the Mexican-USA border.

One would have thought a bit of condemnation could be mustered, even the Arab league has suspended Syria, which is akin to getting evicted from a trailer park for lowering the tone of the neighborhood. ;)

Edit to add a link explaining just how dangerous the Syria situation is; I have always contended war with Syria and Iran is inevitable.
