Long-term flood victims to get extra help

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra is searching for additional measures to assist people who have suffered through flooding for more than a week.

In addition to the Bt5,000 allowance currently available, Yingluck said she had assigned a committee led by Interior Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit to take charge of finding ways to aid long-term flood victims. Adding that the cost of living in Bangkok is higher than upcountry, she said different criteria would be set for the additional help.

"I want to implement measures that will enable victims to re-establish their lives," said Yingluck, expressing her concern for flood-damaged areas such as Thon Buri, and saying she had urged the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to inspect for damage and inform the government so it could respond accordingly.

A Cabinet meeting on November 8 approved the Bt5,000 allowance for 600,000 flood-affected households in 30 districts of Bangkok. Among those entitled to the allowance are residents living on the ground floor of multi-storey apartments who are in receipt of a BMA-issued flood-victim certificate.

The 30 districts are Bang Sue, Dusit, Phra Nakhon, Samphanthawong, Sathon, Bang Kho Laem, Yan Nawa, Klong Toei, Bang Phlat, Bangkok Noi, Thon Buri, Klong San, Rat Burana, Klong Sam Wa, Min Buri, Nong Chok, Lat Krabang, Don Muang, Khan Na Yao, Chatuchak, Taling Chan, Bang Khen, Bang Khae, Phasi Charoen, Lat Phrao, Wang Thong Lang, Sai Mai, Nong Khaem, Lak Si and Thawee Watthana.

What happened to Patum Thani, Nonthaburi, Pak Kret, Ban Bua Thong etc are they being looked at under a different scheme or are they classed as collateral damage? Sorry I omitted Ayutthaya and of course there are many many more areas that have suffered and are still suffering.

Hang on, So its only helping people flooded for more than a week in Bangkok, In Ayutthaya there have been peoples homes flooded for up to 6 weeks up to 2 metres and water has been going down so slow its barely measurable and there's unlikely to be any real relief until the Chao Praya level drops considerably,

I never expected any money, and as it seems the wife wont get it. Told her right from the start you do the papers you get the money I don't need it. I will pay for damages.

Your point is well made and fully understood - I think it was the spin that the government puts on compensating those affected - next door or down the street there will be some not so well off somtum vendor whose life has been turned upside down and could use any assistance the government offers.

Here the mayor of the muh bahn came with papers to claim compensation. So i think it was not clear to many people it was only for BKK. We live in Bang Bua Thong / Bang Yai area.

Actually i stay well clear of Thai bureaucracy, once i could clame some money for a motorbike accident. Told the MIL should could have it if she claimed it. (was not with my insure but the government). They just make you jump through too many hoops and wont pay out in the end. So when they started about compensation i really did not expect to get it and it was nothing compared to the damages.

We're in Muang Ake, been submerged under 2+ meters of water for a month now, and the piddly amount the government is offering won't even come close to covering the hundreds of thousands of baht in damages we have sustained. And now they are telling us it may be January before the water is gone. It is truly shameful the way they have treated the outlying suburbs. But since we were forced to evacuate and now can't get the documents or the pictures required to jump through their hoops, we can't even apply for the meager 5000 baht assistance.

We will sign up for the class action lawsuit though. Don't expect any money from that either, but I do hope that placing those responsible on trial leads to someone taking responsibility for what they have inflicted on all of us.

It was previously said that areas outside Bangkok will also get compensation, although that is yet to be decided. For some unknown reason the Bangkok flood victims get their money know, while those that have been flooded for months have to wait. This shows how completely incompetent this government is. Those flooded for months should have received money long ago. If it's so easy to make the decision for Bangkok residents then it should be just as easy for others.

Our house in Maharat, outside Ayutthaya, has had 2+m of water in it for over 2 months now....Wife got the 5000 along with the rest of the town who were affected but that's the lot!!!!

We are lucky that we also have a four story town house/shop where the wife has been able to put up flooded family members or they'd be living on the side of the road the same as most folk.

The management of this disaster has been pathetic.

I am also amazed by this. Simply amazed.

Decades of being here, this country not stop surprising me.

PS: most of named areas NOT EVEN FLOODED yet. Say, Rat Burana is bone dry, and will stay so. Im visiting there recently, as my own house (Pathumthani) is submerged for a month.

But RatBurana is on the list. Pathumthani is not.

Idiots.

Just returned to Khon Kaen 5.30 pm 24/11/54 went down to Nonthaburi to check the house. Most suprising thing was that about 1.5 hours out of Bangkok we ran into the flooded areas both sides of the highway still underwater - Area at Thamasat University highway passable but about axle deep for a kilometre or so.

Serviceroads either side of the highway at Rangsit flooded with wooden makeshift bridges for foot traffic to get to the highway - service station driveways flooded in closer to Bkk Don Muang most sois still flooded and many cars parked in the normal level parking are now flooded - multi story car parks full but no entry - no exit - expressways packed solid with parked vehicles of all types, private cars, tour buses, taxis, and many many trucks.

Nonthaburi major roads ok but those areas on both sides of the Chao Praya River still flooded, most sois have wooden walkways installed water level rises and falls with the tide swings from dry floors to knee deep on a daily basis.

Nonthaburi lifetime residents who experience annual high water have never had this situation before many who can't live in their houses have taken temporary rentals but as their money runs low are returnining to their houses and living on makeshift planks placed on top of wardrobes for sleeping and others on top of table tops for walking about the house at a half crouch/stoop. On the money side most mattresses have been discarded (soaked) now back to sleeping on bare boards or new mattresses purchased and placed on the makeshift planks I spoke of earlier - no government money of course.

This is not meant as a rant or bleet just an honest update on actual selfsight no hearsay - there will be some smartarse comments along the lines of they should be used to sleeping on bare boards they are Thais well I am not used to it although I am not a Thai I feel justified using the term "smartarse" for anyone who comments and has no real knowlege of the situation Remembering this is only a thumbnail snap of the situation that Thailand is experiencing.

Lets hope this and situations like this are managed better in the future. :jap:
