Kuwait orders crackdown on anti-government protests

2011-11-18 15:48:37 GMT+7 (ICT)

KUWAIT (BNO NEWS) -- The emir of Kuwait on Thursday ordered the National Guard and the Interior Ministry forces to take all "necessary measures" to establish law and order in the country after protesters stormed parliament, the Kuwait Times reported on Friday.

The order was issued following an emergency meeting chaired by the emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah following opposition-led protests which turned violent. He ordered the forces be provided with whatever authority necessary to end chaos in the country, according to the statement.

Clashes erupted late on Wednesday when hundreds of protesters stormed the assembly building and stayed for several minutes in the main chamber. The opposition claimed they were forced to enter the building after security forces began beating up protesters.

The Interior Ministry also issued a statement in which it blamed demonstrators for the riots and said that five security personnel and a national guard member were injured. Government officials have called on the Interior Minister to initiate legal action against all demonstrators who broke into the Assembly.

Meanwhile, the opposition has pledged to continue supporting youth activists regardless of the price they might pay. In a statement issued after the emergency meeting, the opposition warned the "corrupt government" against any attempt to establish a police state or undermine the democratic system in the country, the news report said.

Protests have taken place across Kuwait throughout the year, since before the so-called Arab Spring. However, protests against government corruption have recently increased.
