Featured Replies

Does anyone have a list of the dates and series of American bills that are not acceptable in Indonesia? How about a link?

I don't know about Indonesia, but maybe it's the same as in Thailand. My friends just came from the states and any $100 dollar bills that weren't dated 1996 or later they were not able to get exchanged.

P.S. if there are any Indonesian bank branches in BKK they might know.

I don't think you will have any real problems with the new bills that have the "big heads" on them.

For sure they don't accept 1996 and some series begin with Ax, Bx, Cx, and few Dx. I don't remember exactly. Your notes must be in perfect shape (no marks, no folds, etc) and mostly $100 bill, otherwise the rate will be deducted for up to 500 Rupiah per 1 dollar. Well some countries also apply the same 'rule'.

For travelling, always better not to exchange much and instead use your debit/ATM card get local money from ATM machines.

Check with your credit card company and see how much they charge for overseas ATM withdrawal. Some cards have high fees for overseas ATM use and you should expect at least two months interest on your statement. Don't make a lot of small ATM withdrawals where the fees may match your withdrawal. When I use an ATM I take out enough money to last a week. Use the security box available in many hotels for your cash and valuables.
