This post doesn't belong in the Visa forum. I am moving it to the Travel forum.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

It will be hell! They will check every passport carefully; you can be sure of that. Take sandwiches and a flask of tea for the queues.

If I understand this rightly what they are saying is that a bunch of civil servants whose boss was recently sacked for letting people through the borders without proper checks because they were too busy are having a day off and being replaced by another bunch of civil servants.

Don't Border Agency staff have certain powers, arrest and detention for example, that ordinary civilians don't have? They will need to find a load of civil servants who have that or confer it on them for the day.. They aren't just people who work at the airport.

Current situation is that many airlinea are being asked to cut back flights or capacity, the warnings are that passengers could be held on planes for up to 12 hours. Many flights likely to be diverted.

Btw, for those of you not au fait with situation in UK re overcrowding in the airport terminal it has gained political connotations that are ongoing & connected to the immigration debate. The net result of this is that admission procedures will be followed to the letter and that the terminal can not be allowed to get overcrowded. Were it to do so the border controls would have to be relaxed which is a political no-no. Hence diversions (most likely to Europe)or being held on the plane.

Warrant Immigration Officers do indeed have powers of arrest and can recomend certain people are detained or refused entry, some senior managers are warranted and also have these powers, I suspect there will be sufficient of these on duty to carry out these functions, of course police officers can also arrest immigration offenders.
