While suicide rates are low relative to the rest of the world, that still leaves thousands who do kill themselves. And given my own tragic personal experience I don't find the idea of a young woman attempting to kill herself at all unbelievable.

Needless to say, a Farang trying to kill his GF is also certainly possible.

For that matter, maybe it was some bizarre accident.

Just think how many times you've been in a situation where a Thai "hustler" has an opportunity to connect the dots on a paycheck.

How does one actually prove innocence? I thought the way courts work (in western countries at least) is that they need to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt? Or can he be convicted on mere circumstantial evidence, which sounds like all they will have. The only way he could prove that he did not push her would be to prove he wasn't in the room at the time.

Strange that when a farang jumps it's automatically suicide and when a Thai jumps it must have been murder..

Assuming she jumped of her own accord, I believe the only countries who now regard attempted suicide as a crime in India and Singapore, so she should have no reason to lie.

I have met "nutcases" of both the male AND female type. Since I don't know either of these two, I wouldn't know if one or both are nutcases. But, one thing I do know, I have met AND have read articles about more females than males going "nutso" in love quarrel situations. I met one Asian girl that said she threw acid in the face of her ex-bf (Asian) after she found out he cheated on her. I don't have any "statistics" but I feel that the nutso rate, male/female, could be around 20/80, with the numbers indicating not only percentages, but also how extreme some females can get. So maybe it would be 40/60 in individual numbers, but the females get the 80 for their intensity of berserkness in these situs. There is even a reasonable scenario that the guy is victim and female the instigator. I have known cases where a female WILL NOT STOP pushing her partner's buttons, sometimes threatening blackmail, and thus deserving what happens to her. Again, I have zero info about these two, so all I can say is, best of luck to both, or, perpetrator gets what's deserved. Wait, I do know one thing about the guy, he's got tats. So that means he's one of those "types" that gets tats. There was one thing in news about flooding, many Thais getting psych counseling for depression/suicide.

Detained does not mean arrested or that he was put in a cell or handcuffed. You are also "detained" when you are pulled over for a traffic stop. They simply are questioning him and investigating the incident at this point.

True he is not in jail yet, but the word "Detained" does not mean to be pulled over for a simple traffic check or violation either. Just Google this and you will see that what "Detained" means is;

What did I say that was incorrect? If the story can be believed, I would bet he wasn't detained more than a couple hours. It would appear the police believe she jumped. A detainment is not an arrest and the story is clear in not stating he was arrested. It also makes clear he was detained as part of the investigation .... all very typical in a situation like this in just about any country.

My first visit to Thailand was when I was the right side of 30 and stayed in Pattaya for a total of 2 nights and 1 night in Jomtien. I have been to every island and travellad South to North, I have to say if you are 50 plus stay in Pattaya because if you met a nice girl up North they wouldn't look at you twice.

I came on a three month visa and stayed three years on my first visit after meeting a girl who will not swear, shout and will be up at 5.30am every morning making me my coffee. No sin sod and no money asked for, seriously why would you want a girl under 25 when you are 52. Unless you are a fan of hello kitty yes she maybe young but I hope she isn't one of those girls that play with their phone when you are together.

p.s. two nights in Pattaya was 2 nights too many, I would prefer to live on the North pole.

That kind of story would have happened in any other country and any suspects would have gotten detained at first until the case it solved. If the girl survives, she definitely should stay a few nights at the psychiatric ward.

I have to admit there is a certain bizarre irony in the police worrying as to whether or not this is a murder. As near as I can recall, every flying farang here in Pattaya is instantly ruled a suicide. Seems odd that when a Thai girl jumps, the police launch into high powered investigative mode...

I still think the flying farang thing is the perfect murder. Your girlfriend decides she is better off without you. You hear a knock on the door, open the door, then 6 Thai guys rush in and pitch you off the balcony. They then disappear, the police show up, and the sobbing girlfriend says you seemed very sad, and had financial troubles back home. Case solved........Note to self: live in a apartment on the second floor......

I think this case will come down to the credulity of the witness and what they saw. So far it seems like he is innocent. If he was trying to throw her off the balcony, she would have fought like a cornered wildcat, and he certainly would have had marks on him. The real tragedy would be if he was stitched up, while he was innocent.. Not really sure what is wrong with her either. Sponsors here come and and go like trains at a station, seems odd to try to kill yourself over one of the trains leaving...

I pretty much agree with that, it would be incredibly difficult to throw somebody off a balcony who didn't want to be thrown off without at the very least having a few scratches or bruises to suggest your guilt.

Thai girls or Thais in general can and do "lose it" quite often and when some of these girls get into relationships with farangs, then real communication or proper understanding of what the other means or does can cause problems.

Even if this guy is completely innocent, i feel sure that the BiB will shake him down

Posters need to remember that the police are not interested in rights and wrongs but how much cash can be squeezed from anyone involved. When a farang jumps/is pushed, they can rifle the room for valuables and take a large cut of anything the Thai beneficiary is left by putting the pressure on them out of the public eye through many methods. When a Thai jumps/is pushed, they need to hold the farang and threaten jail in order to force some kind of "bail" or "compensation" payment in which the police act as broker.

A bit of an anecdotal experience. A friend of mine was robbed by a BG he picked up off Bangla Rd in Patong. She lifted several items from his room as my farang friend was asleep. The friend knew where she worked and a copy of her ID was at hotel reception. I had a Thai friend go with my farang friend to the police in Patong to try and locate this BG and have the stolen items returned. The Patong police would not even look into the matter unless the farang friend anted up 50K baht for their trouble. Helluva way to run a crab house if you ask me.

A police officer would never use the word detain if they arrested somebody and would never say they arrested somebody who was simply being detained.

It's unfortunate for the woman may have to deal with debilitating after effects if this was nothing more than an accidental fall, although after reading so many other similar reports I tend to lean towards a jump or a push. I won't even go into my feelings on emotional and physical abuse that seem to run riot by both buyers and sellers in tourist areas there. You're welcome to look those up on my blog, if you wish.

The jump could be as an intentional or accidental part of a threat, and the push could have been as a result of a threat she may have made (found his home address and phone number where his wife is, for example - or had a picture on her phone of him and a young man - whatever).

The trouble could really start if it was her intent to implicate or hurt him and the first thing she says is "he pushed me"... especially if he doesn't have the cash to "settle" things. Let's hope for the unlikely outcome of no lasting injuries - physical, mental or financial.

I know you weren't seriously looking for explanations but had you wanted one then just hang around the average British high street pub at midnight on a Friday and see the quality of gobsh_te 'lady' that the ole country is breeding these days (have heard ozees say the same about theirs). Give me a Thai any day of the week and perhaps the younger generation are also cottoning on.

I could say the exact same for British men. Even Prince William, who once was very attractive, turned into a toad by the time he hit his mid to late 20's. Beckham is the only Brit I can think of who is remotely attractive, and he is only mid 30's, and losing it by the day. And is it any wonder why the Thai's have so much disdain for farang when a bunch of hideous, old losers come here and try to buy off all of their women? Do you really think these poor women will ever harbor anything more than resent for you while you prostitute them out for yourselves? You may be able to buy their bodies, but never their hearts...which are usually long dead by the time they enter into these dysfunctional relationships. I am all for interracial relationships, but the key foundation for any successful relationship is mutual attraction, which is very unlikely between a 20 year old and a 60 year old, regardless of their race or background.

I've just had a thought about witnesses and apologize if it has already been said. There maybe witnesses there maybe not I don't want to get into that but consider this:

How many of you go about your daily business staring at 7th floor balconies to witness whether a person jumped, was pushed or fell from it to the ground. And at 7 stories could you be absolutely sure and identify later who was on that balcony. There maybe some witness who saw her as she fell, attracted to the incident by screams or shouts. There maybe witnesses who saw her land. There is I'm sure plenty of witnesses who saw her on the ground prior to her being taken to hospital. But was there or could there be anyone who witnessed that exact moment of her leaving the 7th story balcony. Without there being some reason to be staring up at that particular balcony I very much doubt it.
