I have no idea where I read this but have known about it for about 10 years. In that time I've only suffered a full blown case of a cold or flu twice when I did not have access to zinc. Not zinc lozenges either with a measly 10 mg., but a full dose of 150 mg ( 50 -70 kg ) - 250 mg ( 70 kg up. )

It works and no one has ever really believed me when I have recommended it. Yes, zinc is toxic. It is a homeopathic remedy and this is addressed. do not take the dosages past 5 days

( and not if pregnant/ lactating either I would have to guess, but not sure of that) but taking it a every fours hours ALWAYS ON A FULL STOMACHE addresses all the questions and side effects in the linked article.

Take 3 doses every four hours and if you are feeling better or at least no worse, keep up the doses until you are completely better within another day or two, or three.

BUT ALWAYS WITH PLENTY OF FOOD or your stomache will protest painfully.

If you are getting sicker , stop the doses- it isn't a flu virus.

The sooner you do it after onset of symptoms the better it works.

This works for many other virus and the articles links to other sources / research. http://www.bbc.co.uk...health-12462910

One sentence of the BBC article is verbatim what I wrote on Chickynet last year sometime. I SWEAR IT WORKS I've just, the last two days knocked off a what surely would have been a 10 day ordeal I got from a cart at Tesco no doubt, with the seasonal influx of foreign virus.

I forgot my own rule # 1 in not getting sick, not touching eyes, nose or mouth.

Teach your kids this, please. Washing hands is recommended so often, but if you touch the door knob on the way out, and pick up a virus and then rub your eyes, pick your nose or bite your nails AKA depositing the virus on mucous membranes, all that hand washing ain't gonna work squat.

Zinc is one of many agents that helps to boost the immune system.

It's benefits are not just related to flu, but rather to anything that requires an efficient immune system to combat it's effect.

It is well to take it for infections, even in conjunction with anti-biotics.

As this is not really Thai related, I'm going to have to close this topic. Also, it is controversial, and at higher levels, can have health risks:

Zinc

There is some evidence that taking zinc lozenges as soon as cold symptoms appear may reduce how long a cold lasts. However, some trials have found no difference in the duration of colds in people who took zinc compared with those who did not.

There has also been research into nasal sprays containing zinc. "Some people believe that the zinc lines the mucosa [the lining of the nose] and stops a cold virus attaching itself to the nose lining," says Dr Joshi. "Unfortunately, this has been found to be no more effective than a placebo."

Health Risks from Excessive Zinc

Zinc toxicity can occur in both acute and chronic forms. Acute adverse effects of high zinc intake include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and headaches [2]. One case report cited severe nausea and vomiting within 30 minutes of ingesting 4 g of zinc gluconate (570 mg elemental zinc) [80]. Intakes of 150–450 mg of zinc per day have been associated with such chronic effects as low copper status, altered iron function, reduced immune function, and reduced levels of high-density lipoproteins [81]. Reductions in a copper-containing enzyme, a marker of copper status, have been reported with even moderately high zinc intakes of approximately 60 mg/day for up to 10 weeks [2]. The doses of zinc used in the AREDS study (80 mg per day of zinc in the form of zinc oxide for 6.3 years, on average) have been associated with a significant increase in hospitalizations for genitourinary causes, raising the possibility that chronically high intakes of zinc adversely affect some aspects of urinary physiology [82].
