Public flocks to Night Safari trial run

CHIANG MAI: -- The Chiang Mai Night Safari, currently open to the public free of charge on a trial basis, has proven popular, with more than 2,000 people pouring through the gates a night, its director said yesterday.

Because of the encouraging demand - the number of daily visitors doubles at weekends to as many as 4,000 - 23 more trams are to be added, plying the tracks laid throughout the park.

The zoo's trial opening is from November 16 to December 31, in the lead-up to its official opening on January 1, said director Pisal Wasuwanich.

It's an opportunity to test all systems and iron out any problems, particularly with ticketing, the trams and guides.

And there are problems.

The park has discovered 15 trams aren't enough to serve the number of visitors, and so between 15 and 50 passenger vehicles and between 11 and 20 light-rail trams are to be added.

Zoo officials have also had trouble with out-of-control kids - at certain points on the tour staff douse the headlights of the vehicles and use a spotlight to point out animals. But it seems that's when some children quickly grow bored and throw tantrums .

But positive reports have emerged from the trial, as well.

Chiang Mai resident Anuwat Kongkhiew said he had been waiting to see inside the zoo and was impressed by the beautiful interiors of the vehicles and the guides' style. He did, however, say there were fewer animals than he expected.
