Sixty-seven violent incidents took place in Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat from November 1-30, killing 41 people and injuring 47, Prince of Songkhla University Pattani Campus's Deep South Watch reported yesterday.

The violence continued even yesterday. Pol Sr Sgt-Major Tuwaehami Nihae, 49, of Yaring district's Ratapanyang Police Station, was shot dead at 7am in Pattani's Muang district as he parked his motorbike at a food stall in front of Ban Puyud's morning market on the Pattani-Yala Road.

Two men on a motorcycle approached and the gunman, riding pillon, shot the policeman three times before speeding away with Tuwaehami's 9mm revolver, said Muang Pattani Police Station superintendent Pol Colonel Somporn Meesuk. Police suspected that the killing was carried out by southern insurgents to create daily chaos, although they did not rule out political motives as Tuwaehami was a relative and canvasser of Pattani Democrat MP Anwar Salae.

Meanwhile, in Pattani's Ma Yor district, the police and a bomb squad inspected the retail military base at Ban Langsad School in Tambon Ka Sor, where suspected insurgents launched an M-79 grenade attack on Tuesday night. The school wall was damaged and Sgt-Major 1st class Somprat Srivaja, 34, sustained a head injury in the grenade explosion. The insurgents also fired a grenade at the house of Tambon Ka Sor village defence volunteer Maleepeng Hami, 34, located 1km from the school. The bomb slightly damaged the roof and killed a cat, but no one was injured.

I think it is getting harder and harder to substitute the euphemism "restive" for what is actually going on in the South, which is a regional civil war.

Correct and well said that man for acknowledging it.

5000+ deaths in 7 years is a bit more than just 'restive'.

:(I feel that the government wants to do the "Thai" thing and hope the problem will go away. Well, in the past 10 years, it hasn't. There have been over 145 innocent Thai teachers alone that have lost their lives from these ruthless insurgents. The Thais seem to get more upset with water flooding their backyards than their fellow citizens being killed by extremists. ???

Not pointing on a specific religion, but when people start "holy wars" things really become complicated. They want to have the South for how many years now? jap.gif

It is difficult to comment muslim related articles. The racism pointing finger is always the sharpest in those cases.I will though try to ventilate my opinion.

This is a war for power. The more muslims sticking together the harsher the radicalists act and the rest of the so called good muslims keep quiet in public. The killing of monks, teachers and eh in a lesser way cops should always give a massive reaction of disapproval. That is not the case. The truth is this will only stop if this territory will be 100% halal. After that the battle will go up north.

If you really want to stay in muslim halal ground this is very easy to resolve. Your muslim brothers live a little more south in Malaysia. Join them and leave the kingdom of Thailand and buddhismteachings for ever. That is only a little step for peace sake. Very easy solution but not one muslim will consider it because peace is not important for invaders with deep colonial & bloodreligion related thougts.

The pacific and Jai Jen buddhist and the Jai Ron muslim can never live together.

Same situation in Israel, India, Philippines, etc. If you give them the "disputed land," they just take it as a conquest and move the front line deeper into enemy territory.

This needs to be acknowledged on a worldwide level. There is a war being waged by the Muslim world against me, you, and everybody else. It will never end unless we admit to ourselves that it is happening and take appropriate steps to fix the situation.

Political correctness be damned. How long will we sit back and pretend we don't see what's going on?
