37 structures in Tablan National Park to be razed

The Nation

Tablan National Park officials will start dismantling 37 resorts and vacation homes encroaching on its territory on Monday.

"We will bring down the illegal structures," the park's chief, Tewin Meesap, said yesterday.

The Civil Court has ordered the demolition of 64 resorts and vacation homes in Tablan National Park. However, some owners have appealed the order to the Administrative Court, saying they have documents to prove that their structures are authorised.

"We will take action on the structures whose owners have not appealed against the demolition order and those whose owners' petitions to the Administrative Court have been rejected," Tewin said. "We will act quickly."

A total of 36 resorts and vacation homes had not petitioned against the demolition order by yesterday's deadline. The Administrative Court had already rejected the appeal filed by the owner of another property, leaving a total of 37 properties to be demolished.

Tablan National Park covers a vast area straddling Nakhon Ratchasima's Wang Nam Khiew district and Prachin Buri's Nadi district.

Tewin said park officials had prepared more than 20 backhoes, forklifts and bulldozers to conduct the demolitions and more than 20 trucks to carry away the debris.

"We have mobilised 200 officials from relevant units to help with the demolition," he said.

Tewin said he had requested a police presence during the demolition to ensure the operation goes smoothly. He said he was a little worried that locals who had lived in the park might not have understood the purpose of the demolition.

"Some people may think the authorities are going to crack down on them too. But in fact, I can assure everyone that the demolition is to be made against illegal structures only. People who live there legally will not be affected," Tewin said.

Would be interesting to find out who actually "owns" the soon-to be-demolished properties.

I venture to suggest that most would be supporters of the last administration, under whose vigilant eye the encroachment took place.

You are ofcourse wrong, since the brute majority of these buildings are quoted as being standing clearly more than 2-3 years...

And there's more than a fair chance that many, maybe the majority have been there many years even several decades. This isn't just recent stuff. This has been making headlines from time to time for as long as I can remember, and I've been here approx. 30 years.
