3 Bomb Scares around BKK; Suspect Arrested

Three explosive devices have been found, one in a pile of garbage in front of a Bangkok Bank branch in Sukhumvit Soi 77 or Onnuj, another at Ladkrabang Soi 13 and one more around the Motorway. The bomb squad has successfully defused the explosives. The bombs were said to be rigged to a remote control detonator.

Police have arrested a 40-year-old man while planting the bomb at around 3 AM this morning. He's believed to be linked to the bomb scare at the Government Lottery Office on Ratchadamnoen Avenue last week.

Both Deputy PM Chalerm Yoobamroong and National Police chief Police General Priewpan Damapong inspected the crime scenes.

One man arrested related to three foiled bomb attacks in Bangkok

The Nation

A man was arrested early Friday after police foiled his plan to launch three bomb attacks in Bangkok, Police Commissioner-General Priewphan Damapong said.

Priewphan said the Metropolitan Police Bureau had received tips-off and learned that the suspect would launch a new round of bomb attacks in the capital. Investigators managed to arrest him 3 am, the national police chief said.

Police bomb disposal officers rushed to disposed a bomb found on Soi Lat Krabang, another in front of Bangkok Bank branch on Soi Sukhumvit77 and another on Soi Onnuj 90.

"I can't say more but I learned that the bomb found in front of the Bangkok Bank branch is the same type with the one found in front of the Government Lottery Office. They were assembled the same way," Priewphan said.

Lovely reporting. The articles say Sukhumvit 77, anyone know exactly where the home made bomb was specifically placed? Was it in front of the Big C (old Carrefour), or much further down the road (as Suk77 stretches all the way out by the airport, if I'm not mistaken).

Correction -- sorry, early morning hadn't had my coffee yet, now I see a bank name in the article. Still however, I wouldn't know where Bangkok Bank is along a 5+ KM road, perhaps a little more clarity is helpful.

I seem to remember Chalerm bragging that the culprit responsible for the Lottery office planting would be apprehended after 3 days. I may have lost count, but I would say it has been more than that.

Just a co-incidence that the only times we see random bombs being planted around Bkk is when the current political mob, and their predecessors, are suffering from public image perception issues.

Wasn't any random bombing when the otherside's going got tough.

Maybe they should start bombing or burning the place down to gain public sympathy and win the next elections.

That could have solved some of the country's problems in the blink of eye.

Six explosive devices found in Bangkok: police

BANGKOK, December 16, 2011 (AFP) - Thai police said Friday they had found and defused six potentially explosive devices in the capital Bangkok, days after the government called for heightened vigilance over the New Year period.

A man was arrested on suspicion of planting the devices outside a bank, on an overpass and at a road intersection, all in the city's eastern suburbs.

"So far six bombs were found at three locations," Major General Wichai Sungprapai, metropolitan area commander, told AFP.

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung told reporters that the suspect, 44-year-old Jirawat Chanpeng from northeast Thailand, denied the charges, but added that he was confident the police had sufficient evidence and witnesses.

He said five of the devices were designed to be triggered by alarm clocks and one by remote control.

The authorities said the discovery followed a police investigation.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Wednesday urged authorities to be on alert after police said they were boosting security at top tourist spots and retail areas in the capital during New Year celebrations.

Police have said areas such as the Central World shopping centre, where a countdown event will be held, and the Khao San Road backpacker district were put on high alert after an incomplete bomb was found in the city last week.

Authorities have not specified what group they believe to be behind the threat.

The floods didn't keep the people's attention for long enough.

Bomb are not designed to go off on impact.

(off topic, the english teacher of my daughter's school thought that; alarm clock went off = alarm clock is broken)

Bombs found at three locations in Bangkok, dismantled

BANGKOK, Dec 16 -- Bombs were found at three locations in eastern Bangkok early Friday, but bomb squads successfully defused all of the devices.

The three sites were Bangkok Bank’s Sukhumvit 77 branch in Prawet district at Soi Lat Krabang 20; Suvarnabhumi market or Soi Lat Krabang 13; and beneath the Motorway in the Udomsuk area near Soi Kanchanapisek 39.

The discovery of the bombs came with the 3am arrest of a 44-year-old suspect who confessed that he placed the bomb at the traffic island in front of the Government Lottery Office earlier this month.

The suspect told police that he set bombs at three different locations. Accordingly bomb squads deactivated the explosives.

At the first location, police found a homemade bomb 5 inches by 10 inches in a PVC tube wrapped with black plastic tape. The bomb was to be detonated by remote control.

At the second location, three explosive devices were inside dish detergent plastic bottle tied with two PVC pipes with an electrical circuit connected to three clocks. The devices were in a bush under the bridge, opposite Suvarnabhumi market.

The third location was at the Motorway at Soi Kanchanapisek 39. Police found two bombs, both inside PVC pipes connected with a clock set to detonate at 12.55 hours.

National police chief Pol Gen Prewpan Dhamapong has inspected the three locations.

Police believed that the bombs were intended to cause a disturbance and expected them to be the work of the same group which placed a bomb in front of the Government Lottery Office on Dec 6.

The suspect was Rayong resident who joined with three or four others. He told police that the group planned to place bombs at eight locations but completed the task in only three places.

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubumrung was scheduled to hold a press conference at Metropolitan Police Headquarters at 9.30am.

On Dec 6, a homemade bomb was found in an open black bag placed on a traffic island in front of the Government Lottery Office on Rajdamnoen Avenue. The bomb squad inspected the device and found that the circuit was not complete and could not function, but it was believed to be placed to cause a disturbance and unsettle the public.

On Dec 14, a suspicious object was found in the undergrowth of unused land at Bangkok's Soi Lat Phrao 80, but was a decoy, unable to function as a bomb. (MCOT online news)

I eagerly await Chalerm's statement of the disease of the person linked to this bomber.

reckon they go around planting them themselves seems to happen always at this time, announce bombs, bingo 2 days later bomb appears.

One post has been deleted. A rather humorous name suggested for the bomber has been given, but further references will be deleted. We no doubt have posters who will start thinking that is his real name.

I am not much on conspiracy theories, but where do you find someone who is bright enough to assemble a bomb, but so stupid that the local constabulary can catch him?

Any idea of what his motives are?

It's politically motivated ofcourse. Chalerm will be along shortly with the first clue to the "Who dun it" puzzle.

so what exactly did he hope to accomplish by planting PVC bombs?? besides the making people freak out part.....or was it just the making people freak out part? blink.gif

i guess he also has some advanced ops training due to his superiority of hiding things, lol.

ohh look at that, first post.

A Hollywood studio would PASS on this story as way too fricking UBELIEVABLE!

Only a moron trusts this scheme to confuse the masses.

Words like patsy and fallguy come to mind.

Do I detect a resemblance to Chalerm; another family member perhaps?

He at least shares the family traits of stupidity, leading to mindless violence.
