Wellington
This Atlas Moth, seldom seen here ,is generally common in Malaysia and Singapore, I have only seen one other, four years ago at Kata, It has "snakes" eyes at each wing tip, believed to be to deter predators. At any rate it measured 10" across which makes it the World's biggest.and we got the picture as it rested at Loch Palm. A most beautifully marked creature. KarenBravo
I see them all the time at my house in Phuket, usually in the morning after they have been attracted to the lights I leave on all night. You sure they're rare? I thought they were common throughout Thailand. Edited December 21, 2011 by KarenBravo
villagefarang
We have them up here in Chiang Rai as well. Not as common as mosquitoes but you do see them.
Jimi007
While I haven't seen one in two years now at my house, they used to come around every November.
glenfaux
I actually got hit in the face by one a few years ago while riding on my bike. It thought it was a big leaf falling from a tree at first but the thud was hard so on the way back i looked around saw it on the road and was amazed at its size. Big Guy
I saw one at night flying through the lights from my balcony. The missus argued and told me it was just a bat. She had to eat her words within a month when she found one in the garden. I have since seen them again but not that frequently in phuket
TigerWan
One landed in my stable on Phuket a few years ago. Those triangles are transparent.
Wellington
I'm glad to be corrected. It seems they are not so rare. But arguably the most beautiful of moths. The first we saw in Kata years ago came inside at night and sadly got chopped by our fan before we could turn it off.
angiud
Locally or the in right time of the year could be common, but not so easy to see anyway.
